MINI PROJECT PHASE-III

INTRODUCTION R
 Vibration is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillation
L
occurs about an equilibrium point.
 The word comes from Latin vibrationem meaning shaking.
J
 The oscillations may be periodic such as the motion of a
pendulum, or random such as the movement of a tire on a
I
gravel road.
 In many cases, however, vibration creates unwanted sounds
T
and causes waste of energy.
 Such vibrations could be caused by an imbalance in the
rotating parts, unknown friction, or meshing of gear teeth. 3

RLJIT DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING www.rljit.in

MINI PROJECT PHASE-III

 Damping is one of the most effective methods of R

controlling vibration.
 There are 4 different ways
L
Friction Damping
Fluid Friction Damping
Eddy Current Damping J
Electromagnetic Damping
 In fluid friction damping oil is used as the viscosity of oil
is greater & the damping force is also correspondingly I
greater.
 Hence damping characteristics of different vegetable oils
will be experimentally investigated in this project.

• What is Python? R
•Python is a popular programming language. It was created by Guido van
Rossum, and released in 1991.
•It is used for: L
 web development (server-side),
 software development,
 mathematics, J
 system scripting.
• What can Python do?
 Python can be used on a server to create web applications.
 Python can be used alongside software to create workflows.
I
 Python can connect to database systems. It can also read and modify files.
•Why Python?
 Python works on different platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, T
etc).
 Python has a simple syntax similar to the English language.

 Python has syntax that allows developers to write programs with fewer lines
5
than some other programming languages.

Literature survey R
1. Carlson J David et al. describes a finite element model of a rotor-bearing
system was presented for a particular oil viscosity & corresponding stiffness
and damping coefficients were calculated and the introduced system L
response graph was plotted. It was observed that with increased of oil
viscosity, damping offered by oil to the system has increased, this effect has
J
decreased amplitude of vibration & increased system damped natural
frequencies.

2. In this research it was discovered that the flash point of coconut oil is high, I
although its viscosity is low when compared with mineral based oil 40 C
coconut oil can be blended with additives in order to increase its viscosity
at high & low temperature, to make it suitable as damping fluid even as
T
high temperature .Palm oil in this instance has the highest co-efficient of
damping of all the vegetable oils even better than the imported mineral-
6
based oil.

3 Haneen Mohammed Ali, Resole shaker, In this work a python script was
R
created to know the characteristics value of soil properties directly using the
statistical kriging method to obtain a safe structure when design is checked & with
L
measured values, it is very close to site & can be adopted python has proven to be a
powerful tool in probabilistic characteristization.python python can help
geotechnical engineers make a decision based on historical data J
4 Joseph A, Python is an object oriented programming language that enables
develops to give fever in efforts to program functions in lesser code lines compared
to other programming languages it has become an attractive application in building I
intelligent models that can predict diagnosis or analysis reservoir and we'll
performance efficiently & accurately in oil & gas industry finally as demand for its
application has grown experimentally I'm recent years especially with advent of AI
T
& machine learning we can safely say that it heals a promising future for the oil &
gas industry

MINI PROJECT PHASE-III

PROBLEM DEFINITION R
 In industrial applications, mechanical vibrations produce numerous adverse effects
including excessive stresses, large deformation, and progressive damage.
 Un checked machine vibration can accelerate rate of wear and damage equipment.
L
 Vibrating machinery can create noise, cause safety problems and lead to degradation
in plant working conditions.
 Vibration can cause machinery to consume excessive power and may damage product J
quality.
 Efforts to mitigate such problems require an integrated interdisciplinary approach to
analysis.
 In order to overcome this problem, using a damping system, vibrations can be
I
brought into control.

T
Experimental investigation of damping characteristics of different
Vegetable oils will help to solve this problem.

Procedure for longitudinal vibration R

• Connect the vibration unit to power source
• Paste the graph sheet on the drum which is rotated by motor and
also place the sketch pen in the slot provided such that it touches the
L
graph sheet
• Fix the top end of the spring and attach the mass to the bottom end
and ensure that mass attached is completely immersed in an oil J
• Switch on the motor and allow it to complete one revolution to draw
a line on the graph sheet
• Apply some forces to the spring and allow it to vibrate longitudinally I
for one complete revolution of the drum and switch off the motor
• Measure ‘x’ & for one cycle on the graph sheet and calculate the
logarithmic decrement, damping ratio, damping coefficient
&damping frequency using appropriate formulae

MINI PROJECT PHASE-III

Conclusion R
 The damping characteristics of a various vegetable oils are investigated.
 It has been observed that highest damping co efficient is obtained for
L
castor oil(9.5Ns/m).
 And also, it taken min no of cycles to come the equilibrium position
compare to the other oils . J
 This is mainly due to castor oil having high viscosity effect which vesselts
in reduction of damping characteristics.
 Finally from the result of experimental analysis the castor oil having good
I
damping characteristics which is nearly equal to the damping
characteristics of SAE grade oil(SAE20,SAE40,).
T
 Therefore, the castor oil can be replaced by the SAE grade oil damping
system which is very economic, inflammable, chemically inherit, easily
available as compare to SAE grade oils.
