Urban areas are already experiencing increased and extended duration temperatures

(known as the urban heat-island effect), rainwater runoff, altered micro-climate patterns
and a loss of greenery!
And how should we build green cities in the future?

Green Roofs
(from the ground)
can provide solutions to these problems!

Benefits of Green Roofs

1. Green roofs can moderate storm water rapid

runoff which contributes to destructive flooding,
erosion, pollution and habitat destruction, and
result in ecological damage and human health
hazards.

2. Green roofs can significantly reduce the ambient

air temperature resulting in cooling the
surrounding area which can have positive effects
on human health.

3. The multiple layers of green roofs prolong the service life of roofing materials from mechanical,
ultraviolet radiation and buffering temperature extremes by a factor of at least two, and often three.

4. Green roofs insulate the inside of buildings from outside heat and conserving energy usage for air
conditioning.

5. High-decibel sounds from aircrafts can be significantly absorbed by green roofs reducing sound
reflection and transmission.
6. Green roofs can supplement as created
wildlife habitats to attract insects, spiders,
snails and songbirds replacing lost natural
habitats.

7. Like natural landscape, a green roof can

provide therapeutic and relaxing view to
building residents, enhance property
values and other similar benefits.

Let us make our cities green, cool fresh free from carbon emissions, and
ecologically habitable, not only to humans but also to other wildlife!

Cristina Colonnade

• In the City of Iloilo, several buildings have

green roofs. Notable is the penthouse
owned by Mr. & Mrs. Marcelino Florete
on top of the B & C Square Office
Building at Corner Solis-Iznart Sts.
Another is the rooftop of the Cristina
Colonnade owned by Atty. Lorenzo
Caperonce at Corner Huervana-Rizal
Sts., Lapaz. Along Luna St., Lapaz, we
can see a veranda-type greenery at the
Lopez Arcade and the green roof above
the EVZ Pharmacy. Partly seen from
below is the vegetated rooftop of the
towering Golden AC Business Center at
E. Lopez St., Jaro. Integrating green
roofs in our urban buildings would be one
step in building green cities in the future.
With a little more information and
advocacy, many may follow suit
especially those environment-conscious
city dwellers.
