Pyramids of

Giza
By Enas yahia radwan
Where are the pyramids of
Giza located?
The Great Pyramid of Giza is part of a
complex of pyramids in Giza, Egypt.
Giza is a town just outside the main
Egyptian city of Cairo. The pyramids
were built in the period of Egypt called
the Old Kingdom. The Great Pyramid
was constructed about 3500 B.C.E.,
which makes it well more than five
thousand years old.
The pyramids of Giza were royal
tombs built for three different
pharaohs. The northernmost and
oldest pyramid of the group was
built for Khufu, the second king of
the 4th dynasty. Called the Great
Pyramid, it is the largest of the
three. The middle pyramid was
built for Khafre ,the fourth of the
eight kings of the 4th dynasty. The
southernmost and last pyramid to
be built was that of Menkaure.
Sphinx it is a statue of a mythical creature with
the body of a lion and the head of a human. It
was carved from limestone. It was likely
originally covered with a layer of plaster and
colored, and traces of the original colors are still
visible next to one of its ears.Located on the
Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in
Giza, Egypt, the Sphinx is also a guardian of the
plateau. It is the oldest known huge sculpture. It
is about 73.5 meters long, including 15 meters of
the length of its front legs, and 6 meters wide. Its
highest height above the ground is about 20
meters to the top of the head.It is believed that
the ancient Egyptians built it during the reign of
Pharaoh Khafre (2558-2532 BC), the builder of
the second pyramid at Giza.It is believed that the
Sphinx was quarried before King Khafre thought
of sculpting it into the shape of a statue. This
statue looks to the east, so the original directions
were changed in the last century to match the
view of the Sphinx.
