TURNING EFFECT

OF FORCE
BLA
 IN AN A4 SHEET DRAW AN SCALE WITH PIVOT
AND SHOW HOW MANY FORCES CAN ACT ON
THIS SCALE .
TURNING EFFECT OF FORCE
 A force may cause an object to turn about
a pivot.

 The turning effect of a force is called the

moment of the force.

 Moments act about a pivot in a clockwise or

anticlockwise direction

can rotate about a pivot point O. The force
acts a perpendicular distance d from O
PIVOT
MOMENT
 The moment of a force is bigger if the force
is bigger .

 Themoment of a force is bigger if it acts

further from the pivot.

 Themoment of a force is greatest if it acts

at 90 ° to the object it acts.
EQUILIBRIUM
 When a beam is balanced ,we say that it is in
equilibrium.

 The force on it must be equal(no resultant

force)

CENTRE OF MASS
 It is the average position of all the parts of
the system, weighted according to their
masses. For simple rigid objects with uniform
density, the centre of mass is located at the
centroid.
