Learning Objectives
After this lesson we will be able to:
o Have a full understanding of the importance of attaining
sustainable development.

environment and how will the environment benefit from us.

o Know the significance of ecological preservation towards a
brighter future.
Introduction
EARTH is the only planet in the universe
known to possess life.

The earth provides all living organisms

with food that they can eat, air for
respiration, and water for drinking. It
provides materials for shelter, clothing,
and other basic necessities.
What is SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT?
A concept refers to meeting the needs of the
present generation without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own
needs.
It involves balancing economics, social, and
environmental considerations in decision-making
and planning.

Sustainable development
considers several factors these
factors include:
A.Population
If we do not check the population increase the
present 5 billion population of the world will
increase even further resources will surely be
depleted and the environment will be degraded
even more if we can control the increase, the
consumption of resources controlled.

Sustainable development
considers several factors these
factors include:
B. Stress on the Ecosystem
How do we stress the ecosystem? Let us cite some
examples. We produce a lot of carbon dioxide by burning
fossil fuels. We do not maintain our vehicles properly.
Thus fuel is burned incompletely, carbon monoxide is
released into the air. Gases like carbon monoxide, carbon
dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide prevent thermal
radiation from escaping into the outer space. Thus, the
temperature in the lower atmosphere increases and the
atmosphere becomes warm. This is called global warming.

Sustainable development
considers several factors these
factors include:
C. Society’s Investment in the
Environment
We do a lot of things today to improve our economic
standards. Some of these activities backfire on us when
we stress the environment to its limits. If we invest a huge
sum of money for some economic endeavor, we must also
invest in a system that will ensure our environment will
not be abused, harmed, or destroyed. This includes proper
waste management and use of eco friendly technology.

Considering these factors, do you think our country can achieve
sustainable development? The UNESCO research book on
Environmental Education offers the following strategies that can be
used:
1. Economic and environmental considerations in decision-making

2. Use of appropriate technologies

3. Proper land use planning

4. Resources must be properly priced

Environmental
Education
The most meaningful and potent strategy for
Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection
is Environmental Education.
Environmental education is the process of recognizing values and
clarifying concepts in order to develop skills and attitudes necessary to
understand and appreciate the interrelatedness among men, his
culture and his biophysical surroundings. Environmental education
also entails practice and decision-making and self-formulating of a
code of behavior about issues concerning environmental quality.
