SOCIAL
IMPLICATIONS
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON
ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIETY

• Computers contain heavy metals, such as lead and

toxic chemicals that pollute the soil and
contaminate groundwater.
• Run-off from landfills contaminates drinking water
and water used for bathing, which exposes
people to dangerous chemicals.
IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY
ON ENVIRONMENT AND
SOCIETY (CONT.)

• Technologies have damaged our world in two

main ways; pollution and the depletion of
natural resources.

• Air pollution occurs when harmful or excessive

quantities of gases such as carbon dioxide,
carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitric oxide
and methane are introduced into the earth's
atmosphere.

Working on a computer can cause back, neck

and shoulder pains, headache, eyestrain and
overuse injuries of the arms and hands.
ENVIRONMENT AND
GREEN COMPUTING

Green computing, also known as green

technology, is the use of computers and other
computing devices and equipment in energy-
efficient and eco-friendly ways.

Organisations that use green computing methods

often deploy energy-efficient central processing
units (CPUs), servers, peripherals and power
systems.

They also focus on reducing resource use and

properly disposing of physical and electronic
waste (e-waste).
GREEN COMPUTING (CONT.)

• Printing: Using paper and ink in an

environmentally friendly way by using recycled
paper and printing on both sides of the paper.

• Saving energy: Enabling the “Sleep” function

on your computer so that it will go into
hibernation when your computer is not in use.

• Disposal: Properly disposing of and recycling

old electronic devices.

USER CENTERED DESIGN

USER CENTERED DESIGN
• User-centered design (UCD) is a collection of
processes that focus on putting users at the center
of product design and development.
• When a product team develops digital products, it
takes into account the user’s requirements, objectives,
and feedback.
• Satisfying user’s needs and wants becomes a priority, and
every design decision is evaluated in the context of
whether it delivers value to the users.
• User-centered design gives you a way of adding an
emotional impact into your products.
USER-CENTERED DESIGN PRINCIPLES 10

Users are involved in the design process from the very

beginning. Critical design decisions are evaluated based on how they work
for end-users.

Importance of requirement clarification. The product team always

tries to align business requirements with user’s needs.

Introducing user feedback loop in the product life cycle. The product
team collects and analyzes feedback from users regularly. This
information helps the team to make more user-focused decisions.

Iterative design process. The product team constantly works on

improving user experience; it introduces changes gradually as it gains
more understanding about their target audience.
