Problem and context
Problem
Engaging professional nursing organisations in nurses’ capacity building for
prevention and management of malnutrition
Context
• SEAR region has high prevalence of stunting, wasting and underweight among
under-five children
• Rising incidence of overweight and obesity among under-five
• Covid pandemic has further worsened the problem of malnutrition
• Strategic Action Plan to reduce the double burden of malnutrition in South-East
Asia Region, 2016–2025 (WHO-SEAR)
• One of the strategic directions is to empower communities, support and strengthen
academia and civil society to promote healthy diets, and form strategic alliances
with stakeholders
Aim and Approach
Aim
• To engage professional nursing organisations(PNO) to contribute to
prevention and management of malnutrition which is a significant health
problem in SEAR

Approach/Strategy
• Consultation meetings and round table discussions with prominent
professional nursing organisations to persuade them to work in tandem
with Government and regional WHO offices for prevention and
management of malnutrition

PROBLEM
Malnutrition is a significant issue in SEAR region and
nurses who form the largest health workforce need to
contribute to malnutrition prevention
