MOTION

(DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT)

MOTION
Motion is a movement of an
object brought about by force.
MOTION occurs when an object
changes position.
Quantities that describe motion
are:
•1. Distance - refers to the length of the
entire path that the object travelled. It
tells how far an object travels and does
not depend on direction.

• Distance is measure by cm,inches,

meters, km, and etc.
What is the Distance?
•A man is walking, then each step is
equivalent of 1km. Now may I ask you, if
your classmate travels 6 steps what do you
think is the distance travelled by your
classmate? And trace the path travelled in a
piece of paper.

ANSWER: 6cm
Quantities that describe motion
are:
2. Displacement - refers to the
shortest distance between the object's
two position, like the distance between
its point of origin and its point of
destination, no matter what path it took
to get that destination.
•Displacement does depend on
direction.
What is the Distance?
•Your classmates move 5 steps to the right
and 2m left, move 5steps to the left, what is
the total distance travelled by your
classmate? Trace the path travelled.

ANSWER: 12m
What is the displacement?
•Your classmates move 5 steps to the right
and 2m left, move 5steps to the left, what is
the total distance travelled by your
classmate? Trace the path travelled.

ANSWER: 2m
Let's say that the ball roll 5m.
What is the total distance
travelled by the ball?
ANSWER: 5m
How about the displacement of
the ball?
ANSWER: 5m
REMEMBER!
• Displacement equal to distance when the
path travelled is a straight line

• Displacement cannot be greater than

distance it can be shorter but it cannotbe
greater than the distance. Displacement is
the shortest length between the object's point
of origin and its point ofdestination.
