Inserting images in a document


In OpenOffice Writer the images can be inserted in three
ways:
● From File
● By Scanning
● Inbuilt Gallery

1. Inserting the images from file


We can insert images from the file which are available in the
system

Select Insert Picture From File

Select the image from the computer and it will be uploaded in the
document as shown.

2. From a scanner or graphics program


– The Images can be scanned or
uploaded from the scanner.
If the user wants to upload the images from the scanner, select the
scanner name and the image which is scanned directly can be
uploaded directly

3. From the gallery – The inbuilt images


can be uploaded, which is similar to the
clipart option

Modifying the Images


The images which are inserted can be modified
from either
● Picture Toolbar Option
● Using Picture Dialog Option

Using Picture Toolbar Option


Select View Toolbar Picture

The picture toolbar window is displayed where the image can be modified and set
the image as black and white, Grey Scale, Watermark etc.,

Using Picture Dialog Option


Select Format Picture (Or) Right click on the
image and select the picture option

Picture dialog box is displayed where the user can change the
background colour for the image, add text, use the image as a
macro etc.,

Flip Vertically or Horizontally


To flip an image vertically or horizontally, select the image and click the
relevant option.

Graphic Filters and

Smooth
● Blurs imperfections and reduces noise in images, creating a softer look.

Sharpen
● Enhances details and edges in blurry images, making them appear sharper.

Invert
● Filter specifically designed to invert the color values of a
color image or the brightness values of a grayscale image.

Remove Noise
● Removes single pixels from an image.

Solarization
● Modifies the picture dramatically.

Aging
● Simulates the effects of time on a picture. Can be applied
several times. A further dialog box opens to adjust the aging
level.

Posterize
● Makes a picture appear like a painting by reducing the number of colors
used.

Pop Art
● Mimics the effects of too much light in a picture. A further
dialog box opens to adjust the parameters.

Charcoal
● Displays the image as a charcoal sketch.
Relief
● A dialog box is displayed to adjust the light source that
will create the shadow and, hence, the relief effect.
Mosaic
● It involves creating a visual effect where an image is composed
of small tiles, each representing a portion of the original image.

Transparency
● Modify the percentage value in the Transparency box on
the Picture toolbar to make the image more transparent.

Cropping Images

● It involves cutting away parts of an image to focus on a specfic area or to


improve the composition. In the Crop page, you can control the following
parameters.

Keep scale / Keep image size


● When Keep scale is selected (default), cropping the

image does not change the scale of the picture.


● When Keep image size is selected, cropping produces

enlargement (for positive cropping values), shrinking (for

negative cropping values), or distortion of the image so

that the image size remains constant.

User can draw different shapes using the Drawing Toolbar. To draw any
shape such as Rectangle, Circle, Flow Charts or any free hand drawing
etc., Enable Drawing Toolbar Menu from the View option. The Drawing
toolbar appears at the bottom of the document.

Select the required Shape and easily the user can draw in the document. We
have an option here as Fontwork Gallery which is similar to WordArt in MS-
Word.

Here, the user can select any type of Font work and click
OK.

Grouping Images
Grouping means an action where different images can be kept together.
In OpenOffice Writer grouping cannot be done directly so for that the
user has to upload the images from drawing application.

Steps to group the images


Step 1: Select File New Drawing option,
drawing application will be displayed where
number of images can be uploaded.
Step 2: Upload the images from file, scan or gallery.

Step 3: Copy paste single image into the OpenOffice Writer or with the help of shift key
all the images can be taken.
Step 4: Select all the images and click on Format Group option. The selected
images will be in a group.

Step 5: Here, separate images will be grouped as a single


image.
Step 6: Whatever changes the user wants to do resizing, adding
background color etc will be applied for the selected images
at a time.
Step 7: If the user wants to work on separate images from the
group, then you have to select “Ungroup” option. All the images
will be independent and the user can work separately on each
image.

Positioning Image /
Graphics inside the text

Arrangement: Used to arrange the image or graphics on a vertical axis in a


document.

If you observe the images they are placed on one


another, which is referred as stacking of images.

Using arranging feature we can send the image to back of the other image
or the image which is at the back can be brought front.

1. Select the image and click on Format and select


Arrange option. It displays whether the image has to
be bring front or forward one step or back one or send
to back.
2. Depending on the user requirement, the required option
can be selected.

After applying arranging feature, the images are displayed as follows

● Anchoring: Used to place the image or graphics either in a horizontal or


vertical position as anchor point. It can either be placed for a page,
paragraph or text or Character.
● Alignment: It is used to place the image in the document either Top,
Center and bottom of the page.
To align the image select Format Alignment.
From here the user can select any of the option

Text Wrapping: It is used to place the image either on both sides of the text or
behind the text or the image can be used as separate paragraph or text.
Click on Format Picture and select Wrap option

None Option: In this option there will not be changes in the document when

the images inserted.

Before Option: In this option the text will appear before the image.

After Option: In this option the text will appear after the image.

Parallel Option: In this option the text will appear before and after the image.

Through Option: In this option the image and the text are super imposed.

Optimal: In this option the image can be moved anywhere on the text. It

prevents the text from placing to the side of the image and there will be space

provided between the image and the text.

Essential Terms
● In OpenOffice Writer the images can be inserted in three ways.
● Arranging the images or graphics between the text, can be done in different
ways. They are: Arrangement, Anchoring, Alignment & Text Wrapping.
● Fill format mode is used in situations where a style has to be applied for the
scattered objects in the document.
