SOIL AND SOIL COMPONENTS
• Soil supplies water and mineral elements
and provides physical support and
anchorage for the plant.
• High organic matter content in the soil is
desirable since they provide nutrients to the
soil.
THE IMPORTANT SOIL CHARACTERISTICS THAT
MUST BE CONSIDERED IN VEGETABLE PRODUCTION
•
soil type
• amount of organic matter
• soil acidity (pH)
TYPES OF SOIL HAVE CERTAIN
ADVANTAGES FOR CERTAIN CROPS
• SANDY SOIL
- are not well- adapted for
vegetable because of the difficulty in
maintaining an adequate level of
moisture and also because they are
infertile.
• LOAMY SOIL
-is more fertile than the sandy loam
and have greater water-holding
capacity than the coarse texture
soils.
- represent an ideal vegetable soil
Soil acidity
-influences the availability of both
macro and micronutrients to the
plants
- the acidity of the soil can be reduced
by liming or addition of calcium or
calcium compounds.
HEAT STERILIZATION
100% compost
100% soil-less mix
25% garden soil + 75% compost
25% soil-less mix + 25% garden soil + 50%
compost
25% garden soil + 75% soil-less mix
50% soil-less mix + 50% compost
