What is Fluid Mechanics?
Any substance that is continuously deformed when
subjected to shear stress is called a fluid.

Mechanics is the branch of physics that is concerned

with the analysis of the action of forces on matter.
Fluid Mechanics is the analysis of action of forces on fluids.

What is Fluid Mechanics?

“Fluid Kinematics" deals with fluid motion without

considering the force and moments responsible for such a
motion.
• How fluid flows?
• How to describe the motion of a fluid?
“Fluid Dynamics" includes force in addition to kinematics.
Studying Fluid Mechanics

• Fluid Mechanics is applied in;

– Aerodynamics
– Bioengineering and biological systems
– Combustion
– Energy generation
– Hydraulics and Hydrology
– Hydrodynamics
– Meteorology, Ocean Engineering
– …numerous other examples…

Types of Forces on Materials
The internal resistance of a material to the applied force is
called Stress.

Stress is a measure of the internal forces in a body between

its particles. These internal forces are a reaction to the
external forces applied on the body that cause it to separate,
compress or slide.
