PIECES OF EVIDENCE

USED TO PROVE
EVOLUTION
OBJECTIVES:

• Discuss the evidences of evolution

• Explain how each evidence is used to prove
evolution.
• Relate the evidences of evolution to lessons
from AP, Earth Science, Chemistry.
WHY DO YOU THINK SPECIES ON
EARTH LOOK THE WAY THEY DO?
WHY DO SCIENTISTS SAY THAT
ALL LIVING ORGANISMS ON
EARTH ARE CONNECTED
THROUGH COMMON ANCESTRY??
HOW DO SCIENTISTS KNOW THAT
EVOLUTION HAS OCCURRED. ?
GROUP WORK:
GROUP 1: FOSSIL RECORD
GROUP 2: COMPARATIVE ANATOMY
GROUP 3: EMBRYOLOGY
GROUP 4: BIOGEOGRAPHY
GROUP 5: MOLECULAR EVIDENCE
DISCUSSION:
CLAIM: DARWIN'S THEORY OF
EVOLUTION.
• He stated that the diversity of todays organisms
descended from older species and common
ancestor; this happens through the mechanisms of
natural selection on which organisms developed a
modified behavior, trait or characteristics as they
adapt or become fit to their present living
environment.
EVIDENCE:
FOSSIL RECORD

•Fossils- remains of a living

organism that lived in the past.
FOSSIL RECORD

•Fossil showed that organisms from

the past look very different from the
organisms living today.
COMPARATIVE ANATOMY

•Body structures of the organisms may be

compared to each other to investigate
more on evolution.
CLASSIFICATION
HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURE

•These are body structures from different

organisms that may look somewhat
similar to each other or have the same
component but may perform different
functions.
HOMOLOGOUS STRUCTURE

•Homologous structures suggest common

ancestry or shared descent.
ANALOGOUS STRUCTURE

•These are body structures that

look the same and have the
same function but different
structures.
ANALOGOUS STRUCTURE

•Analogous structure suggest that

organisms of different descent or
close common ancestor have evolved
the same structure because of the
same need.
VESTIGIAL STRUCTURES

•These are body parts that are still

present in some life forms but
have no clear functions.
EMBRYOLOGY

•Early development stages

organisms were studied and
compared.
EMBRYOLOGY

• Embryology suggests that organisms that are

closely related seems to have similarities or
common traits during their embryonic stage
because they evolved from a common ancestor.
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

•Molecular biology studies showed that the

more similar the DNA sequence of
organisms are, the more relevant they are
with one another.
BIOGEOGRAPHY

•Scientists study the

geographical distribution of
organism on Earth.
BIOGEOGRAPHY

•Their findings suggest that some

living organisms are unique to
specific places because they have
evolved to adapt on certain
condition present in those places.
TREE OF LIFE

•Phylogenetic tree
•Tree or diagram used to present the
evolutionary relationship between the
organisms using the different
evidence
ASSIGNMENT:

•½ CW
•Explain the role of paleontologists,
geneticists, and other scientists in
uncovering and interpreting evidence for
evolution in an essay.
