METEROLOGY
• The elements comprises the meteorological environment

• Atmospheric pressure

• Air temperature

• Humidity

• Rainfall

• Direction and speed of wind and movement of clouds and character of

weather
CONTENT
• KATA THERMOMETER

• SLING PSYCHOMETER

• MIN & MAX THERMOMETER

• WET & DRY BULB THERMOMETER

• CET CHART
Difference between weather and climate?
• Weather is condition of atmosphere at a particular place and time

• Climate is average condition of the atmosphere of a specific place over a long

period of time usually over 30 years

Mercury thermometer is used because of high boiling point

Alcohol used because it doesn’t solidify even at lowest temperature

KATA THERMOMETER
• COOLING POWER OF AIR

• Kata means down

• Alcohol

• Bulb 4cm and 1.8cm diameter

• Heated

• 38 – 35 deg c

• Cooling power = kata factor/time (sec)

• Kata factor

• Milli calories/sq. cm/sec

GLOBE THERMOMETER
GLOBE THERMOMETER

• Mean RADIANT TEMPERATURE of the surrounding

• USES

• Improve working conditions

• FACTORY

• HOSPITALS

• LABORATORIES etc.
GLOBE THERMOMETER

• Matt black absorbs heat from surrounding objects/ machines

• 0 – 100 deg c

• Difference between the globe and the temperature outside the globe is called the

actual radiant temperature

SLING
THERMOMETER/PSYCHROMETER
• RELATIVE HUMIDITY

• 2 MERCURY THERMOMETER

1. WET

2. DRY

• MOUNTED SIDE BY SIDE, has a handle

• By rotating the bulb is exposed to air at a definite velocity

• 4 per second for 30 sec

• Percentage
RELATIVE HUMIDITY

Relative humidity is the proportion of the actual amount of water vapor in a mass

of air
SLING
THERMOMETER/PSYCHROMETER
• RELATIVE HUMIDITY

• 2 MERCURY THERMOMETER

1. WET

2. DRY

• MOUNTED SIDE BY SIDE, has a handle

• By rotating the bulb is exposed to air at a definite velocity

• 4 per second for 30 sec

• Percentage
WET & DRY THERMOMETER

• RELATIVE HUMIDITY

• Two types mercury and alcohol

• Mercury thermometer is used because of high boiling point

• Alcohol used because it doesn’t solidify even at lowest temperature

WET & DRY THERMOMETER

• Drier the air, lower the wet bulb reading

• If the wet and dry bulb thermometers record the same identical temperature it

means its hundred percent saturated with moisture

• If the difference increases with increase In the dryness

MINIMUM & MAXIMUM
THERMOMETER
MINIMUM & MAXIMUM
THERMOMETER
• Aka six thermometer

• Scientist SIX

• Get the maximum and the minimum temperature of a day

• Maximum thermometer – mercury

• Expands with increase in temperature

• Minimum thermometer - spirit/ OH

• Shrinks with decrease in temperature

CORRECTED EFFECTIVE
TEMPERATURE CHART
• Combined air temperature and velocity

• Most widely used

• To calculate the comfort zone

• By calculating the reading of globe thermometer, wet bulb temperature and air

velocity
SOLVE IT?

• GT – 30 Deg C

• WBT - 26 Deg C

• AIR SPEED = 1.5m/s

COMFORT ZONE
SUMMARY
• KATA THERMOMETER

• GLOBE THERMOMETER

• CET CHART
SUMMARY
• KATA THERMOMETER – Cooling power of air

• SLING PSYCHOMETER – relative humidity
