FERTILIZER

Allan Jay Sapla

LESSON OBJECTIVES
1. Define fertilizer.
2. Enumerate different kinds of fertilizer.
3. Differentiate the methods of applying fertilizer.
4. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using
fertilizer.
ACTIVITY 1. ARRANGE ME

GROUP LEARNERS INTO 4 THEN LET

THEM ARRANGE THE SCRAMBLED

FERTILIZER
Any natural or synthetic substance
that is applied to soil or to plant to
supply plant nutrients.
HAVE YOU EVER WONDER WHAT IS
THE MEANING OF THIS NUMBERS IN
THE SACK OF FERTILIZER?
GUARANTEED ANALYSIS
The guaranteed analysis (or fertilizer grade) is a listing of
nutrients contained in the bag, by weight. The first number
of the analysis IS N (NITROGEN), the second number
represents P2O5 (phosphOROUS), and the third number
K2O (potasSIUM).
There are 17 essential needed by plant. These
nutrients are hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen,
phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium,
sulfur, chloride, iron, boron, manganese, zinc,
copper, molybdenum and nickel.
Some of these nutrients are supplied by
soil, water and air – while others need to
be supplemented with the use of
fertilizer.

TWO GENERAL
CLASSIFICATION OF
FERTILIZER
1. ORGANIC/ NATURAL
2. Chemical/ SYNTHETIC
KindS of fertilizer according to element present

1. SINGLE FERTILIZER- CONTAIN ONLY

1 OF THE 3 MACRONUTRIENT/
ELEMENT (N-P-K)

CAN YOU GIVE SOME EXAMPLE?

EXAMPLES
KindS of fertilizer according to element present

The most common single

fertilizer is

urea.

2. INCOMPLETE FERTILIZER-
CONTAINS ONLY 2 OF THE 3
MACRONUTRIENT/ ELEMENT (N-P-K)
CAN YOU GIVE SOME EXAMPLE?

KindS of fertilizer according to element present

3.COMPLETE FERTILIZER- CONTAINS

ALL THE 3 MACRONUTRIENT/
ELEMENT (N-P-K)

CAN YOU GIVE SOME EXAMPLE?

EXAMPLES
KindS of fertilizer according to element present

4.mixed FERTILIZER- achieved by

combining two fertilizer material

CAN YOU GIVE SOME EXAMPLE?

5.Foliar FERTILIZER- fertilizer which is liquid in

form and usually sprayed onto the plant.
The effect is fast because it is directed on the
leaves of plant
EXAMPLE
ACTIVITY 2. MIX &
MATCH.
LET EACH GROUP Match THE
DESCRIPTION OF THE
DIFFERENT TYPES OF
FERTILIZER.
Methods of applying
fertilizer
1.Broadcasting –spreading the
fertilizer material evenly on the
field.
2.Basal application- applying
fertilizer before planting the
plant.
3.Side dressing-fertilizer is placed in
between the rows and around the
plants
4.Ring application –recommended for
fertilizing trees. dig hole around the tree
and place the fertilizer in the holes
5. Fertigation is a method of fertilizer application
in which fertilizer is incorporated within the
irrigation water by the drip system. In this system
fertilizer solution is distributed evenly in irrigation .
6.Foliar application-
Foliar feeding is a technique of feeding plants by applying
liquid fertilizer directly to the leaves. Plants can absorb
essential elements through their leaves. The absorption takes
place through their stomata and through their epidermis. Plants
are also able to absorb nutrients through their bark.
ACTIVITY 3. DESCRIBE ME
LET THE GROUP DESCRIBE THE
DIFFERENT METHODS OF
APPLYING FERTILIZER USING
THE IMAGES PRESENTED.
ACTIVITY 4. FILL ME
RIGHT
LET EACH GROUP PLACE IN THE
APPROPRIATE BOX THE CUT OUT
PAPERS ABOUT ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES OF USING
FERTILIZER.
