 INTRODUCTION
 A jack is a mechanical device which uses a screw
thread or a hydraulic cylinder to lift heavy loads or
apply great linear forces.
 The most common forms of jacks available in the
market are ,Scissor car jacks. House jacks,
Hydraulic jacks, Pneumatic jacks and Strand jacks
that are extensively used in Construction,
Industrial.
 Classification of jack
Jack can be categorized based on the type of force the employ
as follow ,
 Mechanical Jacks and
 Hydraulic Jacks
 Types of mechanical jacks are
a) Scissor jack
b) House jack
Types of hydraulic jacks are
a. Floor jack
b. Bottle jack
Scissor jack
 A scissor jack is a device which is used to lift heavy
vehicles, partially or fully from the ground for changing the
tire and for maintenance purpose.
 Scissor jack includes one power screw which is rotating, two
fixed nuts, four links which is connected to nuts, eight pins
used to fixed that four links, two rings provided at screw end
and load platform supported by upper two links.
 In recent time, several types of car jacks are available for
lifting vehicles.
CONT…
 However available car jacks are either manually operated or
using external power operated.
 A scissor jack is operated with the help of power screw which
is in rotary or turning motion.
 Scissor jack is a mechanism made up of nut and bolt
arrangement and its principle of working is same as that of
inclined plane.
 PROBLEM STATEMENT
 We found that the scissor jack was very difficult to be used
because this type of jack needed more strength and energy to
operate this jack.
 Thus, a project has been conducted to find the solution on how
to design a scissor jack for the car using the simplest and
cheapest way while it is energy saved .
 Scissor jack present difficulties for the elderly, women and are
especially.
CONT…
 available jacks are typically large, heavy and also difficult to
store, transport, carry or move into the proper position under
an automobile.
 Suppose car jacks must be easy to use for pregnant women or
whoever have problem with the tire in the middle of nowhere.
 The purpose of this project is to encounter these problems.
 0BJECTIVE
 GENERAL OBJECTIVE
 The general objective of our project is to design, model and
analyze the scissor jack to lift up to a height of 355mm and
with the carrying capacity of 2000k.g.
CONT…

 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
 To design each components of scissor jack.
 To make the scissor jack easy to operate with minimal

effort required by the user.

 To design the scissor jack in such away that it can be

easily maintained and repaired if necessary.

 To ensure that the scissor jack meets all relevant safety

standards and regulation.

 DESIGN REQUIRMENT

 The design requirement of scissor jack are listed below

 Minimum lifting height 150 mm,
 Maximum lifting height 355 mm and
 Maximum lifting capacity 2000k.g
Limitations
 In this project we will do only software design and
analysis of scissor jack but not the real object since
the shortage of time , material requirement ,for
scissor jack time needed to design
 METHODOLOGY AND MATERIAL
 METHODOLOGY
 The mechanism is dedicated to passenger vehicles with an unload

weight not exceeding 2 Ton.

 Initial figure of model was designed in solid works2022.
 Numerical calculation was calculated with the help Machine Design

Data Book and after that we have studied the different stresses

induced in the components of scissors jack which may responsible

for failure and find load carrying capacity of scissors jack of

different materials.
CONT…
 The mechanism was analyzed numerically, at maximum lift
height of 355mm.

 MATERIALS

 Scissor jacks are usually made of materials that are very

strong and are suitable for withstanding heavier loads on it.
 Steel is selected as material for scissor jack because of its
durability
CONT …

 Three Different Materials taken are:

 ASTM A36 Mild Steel
 AISI 1045 Graded steel
 GS-52.3 Cast Steel.
 Material selection of each component
 Lifting member
 The web of the lifting member is cut out near the bolt and nut
connections to allow proper serviceability of the scissor jack
at its maximum and minimum heights.
 We select graded Steel 1040

 Power Screws
 A power screw is advice used in machinery to change rotary
motion in to linear and usually, to transmit power.
CONT …
 This must have adequate strength to with stand axial load and
the applied torque.
 We select ASTM A36AMild steel.
 Connecting member
 These fasteners as used to fully transfer the applied load from
the break, to the rivet, which connects the upper arm with the
fastener.
 We select GS-52.3 cast steel
 Base plate

 The base plate should with stand the applied load plus the
whole component or linkage load by itself.
 The force we have to select the material during the design
process in order to resist the above all loads.
 We select the material steel alloy AISI-1040
 Cup

 This cup is subjected to compressive stress and bending stress

which is placed at the top of the frame and should with stand
the applied load without failure.
CONT …
 We select steel alloy4340
 Pin

 The pins are used to joining a rotating link axis.

 The existence of the jack will depend on the ability of the pin

not to fail under sudden shear, tensional and compressive forces.

 They are used to hold parts together or limit travel of moving

parts
 We select steel, a 1045 grade steel
 DESIGN AND ANALYSIS OF THE
PROJECT
 General design consideration
 Type of load and stress caused by load
 Convenient and economical features
 Selection of material , it is important that the designer should
select appropriate and most important material.
 By identifying characteristics of material like strength,
durability, flexibility, resistance to heat , machinability,
welded or hardness.
 Geometry Analysis

 Scissor jack where its maximum lifting height 355

mm and a minimum height of 150mm.
 To find a suitable angle of links at maximum and
minimum height .
 Then find the minimum and maximum angle
 We find the minimum angle
h min = 150mm-2(20mm) = 110mm

h min /2 L then, h min /2= 55mm

C0NT …
 sinαmin = OPP/HYP αmin = 20.1 degree
 then find the maximum angle
 hmax = 355mm-2(20mm) , hmax = 315 mm ,
 hmax/2 = 157.5 mm , sinαmax = OPP/HYP , αmax =
79.85deg

 FORCE ANALYSIS
 The force is based on assumption that the scissor lift loaded vertically symmetrical.

CONT …
 The maximum capacity of scissor lift is 2000kg, so applied force.
 Weight = mass × gravity =19620N
 The forces which are acting to horizontal direction are,

∑FX = 0 , F1x-F2x = 0 but F1x= F1 ×

F 2x = F 2 × ,

Then, F1 × – F2 × = 0 ,F2 = F1
 Therefore, the force acting on each links are equal, F1 = F2 = F3
= F4 = F
CONT ….
 Vertical components
∑FY = 0

F1y+F2y - w = 0 ,but F1y= F1 ×

F2y = F2 ×

Then, F1 × + F2 × - W = 0

2F× -W=0 So, F= 𝟏𝟗𝟔𝟐𝟎𝐍⁄𝟐𝐒𝐢𝐧79.85= 9965.96N

CONT …
 The forces which are acting to horizontal direction are ,

 DETAIL DESIGN ANALYSIS OF EACH COMPONENTS

 Design of Lifting member

Design stress = 310Mpa/2 = 155Mpa
From force analysis F1 = 28545.68N and = 155Mpa
= 184.16mm2
For design consideration an area of lifting member (A L = 374mm2)
Tensile strength , F1/A , = 28545.68N / 374mm2
= 76.32mm2
From the maximum distortion energy theorem; where , δy =0 and τxy=0.

= √( 2+y2 - y+3τxy2) =√(76.322+0−0+3(0))= 76.32Mpa

The design is safe, because d>; .𝑒 155Mpa>76.32Mpa

 Design of the power screw

then find the helix angle α so , α =α = = 4.66
for square thread take µ from (0.1 – 0.15) take µ = 0.125
friction angle (β) = β = = 7.1o
