DERIVATION OF REYNOLD’S

NUMBER
EXAMPLE 4
For a pressure measurement shown. If the density of the fluid is 950 kg/m^3
with an absolute viscosity of 0.350 Pa*s

(Use Hagen-Poseuille Formula)

A. Calculate the rate of flow in L/s

B. Calculate the Reynold’s number
C. If the pressure are the same but there is a pump between A and B which
adds 12 m head rise in the flow direction, Calculate the Reynold’s number
EXAMPLE 5
Two pipes A and B which are connected in series have diameter and
lengths equal to 450 mm 180 m , 600 mm 500 m. respectively. Water
flows into a pipe at 340 L/s. The difference in elevation between
entrance and exit of the pipe is 6 m. Assume f= 0.02 for all pipes

Calculate:
a. The headloss due to friction
b. The change in pressure between A and B
c. The equivalent length for a 250 mm diameter pipe
EXAMPLE 6
The Pump in flow at A is 150 L/s. at a discharge pressure of 600 kPa and
the outflow at B is 50 L/s. Assume hazen coefficient C for all pipes
C=100

Calculate:
A. The elevation of the energy gradient

B. Discharge supply from tank towards C

C. Outflow at point C in L/s
