Three possible types of solutions for a system of nonlinear equations
involving the intersection of PARABOLA AND A LINE.
a. No solution - The line will never intersect the parabola.

b. One solution - The line is tangent to the parabola and intersects the parabola at exactly one point.

c. Two solutions - The line crosses on the inside of the parabola and intersects the parabola at two
points.

Plot the center and the radius on the Cartesian plane and draw

SOLVING SYSTEM OF
NONLINEAR EQUATIONS USING
SUBSTITUTION METHOD
Steps in solving systems of nonlinear equations
using substitution method.
Step 1: Choose one equation from the system that will be used to substitute in
the other equation.
Step 2: Using the chosen equation, solve one variable in terms of the other
variable.
Step 3: Substitute the derived equation in step 2 into the other equation.
Step 4: Substitute the value of the variable derived in step 3 to one of the
equations to solve for the other variable.
Step 5: Check the answer by substituting the solutions to the given equations.
EXAMPLE 1:
Find the solution set using substitution method.
Given:
y = x2 +1 equation 1
x– y=–1 equation 2
Solutions:

Step 1: You may choose equation 2 x – y = – 1

Step 2: Solve for x in terms of y.
