What is a Construction Industry?
This is a branch of manufacture and trade
based on the building, maintaining and
repairing of structures. This includes
drilling and solid mineral exploration.
Categories of Construction Industry
1. Building Construction Industry:
All contractors and operative builders
primarily engage in the construction of
residential, farm, industrial, commercial, or
other buildings.
2. Heavy Construction
Industries
Contractors primarily
engage in heavy
construction other than
buildings, such as
highways and streets,
bridges, sewers, railroads,
irrigation projects, flood
control projects and marine
construction.
3. Special Trade
Construction Industry

All contractors who undertake


activities of a type that are
specialised either to building
construction, including work on
mobile homes, or to both
building and nonbuilding
projects such as painting,
electrical work, plumbing, etc.

1. Drawings and Plans:
Drawings show a building and how it is to be constructed.
2. Programme of Works:
The document shows the sequence of activities involved in the construction
project.
3. Specifications:
They are written documents that provide more information than drawings.
4. Schedule:
They are documents that show specific design information. They are produced
for jobs regularly carried out e.g windows, doors, floors, drainage, lintels,
sanitary wears, etc.

of construction materials.

What is a house?

• A house is a single unit residential building. It ranges in


complexity from a rudimentary hut to the complex structure of
wood, concrete and other materials. The types of housing therefore
include; cottages, skyscrapers, blocks of flats(apartments), duplex,
bungalows, detached houses, etc.
TYPES OF HOUSES
• There are four main types of housing, which are;

1. BUNGALOW

The word ‘bungalow’ was derived from an Indian word,


‘bengali house’ which means small houses.

• Much easier

• Security may not be as tight

2.DUPLEX

•This is a house that has 2 units attached to


each other. This is an apartment having rooms
on two floors

• It may be better fit for some family situation
•Disadvantages
• Repairs are make maintenance more
expensive
3.DETACHED
HOUSE
•A detached house is not
joined to another one. This
is a standalone house.
•Advantages
• More spare storage
•Diadvantages
• Maintenance is
consuming
4.SEMI-DETACHED
HOUSE
•a single duplex that shares a common wall with the
next house. It is one that is joined to another similar
house only on one side.

• More affordable
• More space than apartments
•Disadvantages
• Lack of privacy
