INTRODUCTION

What is Needs Analysis?

According to Brown (1995), Needs Analysis is the systematics

collection and analysis of all information necessary for
defining and validating a defensible curriculum.
THE OBJECTIVES OF NEEDS ANALYSIS
After learning this material, the teachers will be able to :
1.Know who the students are and their background
exactly.
2.know the materials which are suitable for the
students.
3.choose methodology for teaching process
appropriately.
4.Find out the required skills of students needs in
order to perform a particular role at work-place well.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
The process of curriculum design/development will surely
impact on the learning and learners. It plays a crucial role and
becomes a mandatory phase in the process of curriculum,
syllabus, and lesson plan design. Therefore the teachers can do
Explanation, Presentation, Discussion, and Review Question in
the teaching and learning process because it is very important
for a teacher to do in order to reach the goal of teaching well.
THE PURPOSES OF NEEDS ANALYSIS
Needs Analysis in language teaching may be used for a number of
different purposes as follows :
1.To collect information about particular problem learners are
experiencing.
2.To find out the required skills a learner needs in order to perform a
particular role at work-place.
3.To help determine if the existing course adequately addresses the
needs of potential students.
4.To determine which students from a group are most in need of
training in particular language skills.
5.To identify a gap between what students are able to do and what they
need to be able to do.
Here are some Characteristics of Generations
Some Characteristics of Generation Z (Born 1995-2009)
• They are our first “digital natives”
• Diversity is their norm
• They are pragmatic and financially minded
• They are shrewd consumers

Some Characteristics of Generation Alpha (Born 2010-2014)

• Alpha Children are permanently connected / hyperconnected
• Technological
• Diverse
• Visuals
• Independent
The various focuses of Needs Analysis

Hutchinson and Waters (2010) divided needs into target needs and
learning needs. The analysis of target needs can look at Necessities,
Lacks and Wants.
NEEDS ANALYSIS
Richards, 2001

Procedures for obtaining clear information about learner

needs in learning a language are called Need Analysis.

Need Analysis is identification of learning needs is a

systematic process of gathering information about different
students' characteristics, abilities, and preferences for
learning.
LEARNING NEEDS
Robinson (1991: 7)

“learning needs are “…what the learner needs to do to actually acquire

the language”.

Learning needs refer to who the learner is, socio-cultural background

and learning, age, gender, and background knowledge and attitudes
toward the language English. Apart from that, this aspect also explores
information about learning styles and preferences Effective teaching
methods for students will be taken into considerationin making teaching
materials
DISCOVERING TARGET NEEDS
There are some ways in which the information about target needs
can be discovered. Among others are :
• Questioner
• Interviews
• Observations
• Data Collection
• Informal Consultations
• Assignment
• Test
Some example questions about Needs Analysis
In Building questions to be analyzed we need to ilvolved question about them :

1. What will the course be used for?

2.Why are the students taking the course?
3.Where will the language be used?
4.Who are the students?
5.What do they know already about English?
6.What are their learning and socio-cultural background?
7.What is their attitude to English and to English culture?
8.What resources/materials are available?
9.What is their concept of teaching and learning?
10.What learning methodology will appeal to the students?
Evaluating Needs Analysis

According to Nation and Macalister (2010), needs analysis is a kind of assessment and
thus can be evaluated by considering its validity, reliability and practicality.
CONCLUSION
The result of the needs analysis help us as teachers to identify
the student’s prospective professional needs, the students’
needs in terms of language skills and the student’s deficiencies
in the area of language skills. Only after analyzing the students’
need and determining the objectives of the language course, we
can select a material that meets the needs of the student. Thus,
need analysis is the foundation on which we can develop
curriculum content, teaching materials and methods that can
lead to increasing the learners’ motivations and sucsess
