Standard Coordinate System
XYZ are linear axis where Z is
aligned with the spindle of the
Machine

ABC are rotary axis rotating around

XYZ respectively

UVW are parallel linear axis along

XYZ respectively

There are two different Methods:

1) As Pictured. Every plane is its own

Work offset and these are set
ahead of time on the machine

2) Each of these planes is used as a

Tool plane with the WCS used as
the Center of Rotation (COR). This
is most common and easiest
method.

CONTROLLING MULTIAXIS MACHINES
THE MAIN CONTROLS

Cut Pattern Tool Axis Collision

Toolpath Tool Direction Gouges

Controlling 5-axis Machines
1. Cut Pattern Control – Guides the tool’s cutting directions
THE PATH

2. Tool Axis Control – Orientation of the tool’s center axis as it follows the cut pattern
THE TOOL DIRECTION

3. Tool Tip Control* – Geometry that the tool tip is compensated to follow
TOOL TIP LOCATION ALONG THAT DIRECTION AND PATH

4. Collision Control – Adjusts cut pattern or Tool axis to minimize gouges
