• The first 4 minutes of the Internal


Assessment (speaking test) is based on one
of these literary works.
• Your teacher will give you two unseen
extracts, one from each book studied.
Supervised preparation time is 20 minutes.
• This is an official assessment that is sent to
the IB.

Exam outline
Internal assessment at HL consists of an individual oral assessment—productive
and interactive skills .
Part 0: Supervised preparation time. You are not allowed to use any other course
materials, computer, mobile phone or similar.
When the teacher gives you the two extracts carefully decide which one to present.
Always pick the extract you have the most to talk about. You can make up to 10
points in bullet-point form on a blank sheet of paper given to you by your teacher.
20 minutes
Part 1: You will present the literary extract and explore it through the lens of a
literary text. In this part, your teacher will assess your presentation skills. Use the
thesis-driven model to present the text ( context, content, subtext).4 minutes

Part 2: You will engage in a discussion with your teacher after this. Your
teacher will discuss with you the ideas about the extract you have
presented in Part 1. In this part, the teacher will assess your interactive
and communication skills. The teacher could ask you open-ended
questions and give you the opportunity to speak freely. 4-5 minutes

Part 3: In this part of the exam, you will have a general discussion on at
least one additional theme (of the five prescribed themes) from the
English IB course. In this part, the teacher will also assess your interactive
and communication skills.5-6minutes

The Dos and Don'ts of Individual Oral:

DO NOT: Only summarize plot DO: Analyze the thematic and symbolic significance
of events in the story
DO NOT: Say you didn't like a character DO: Explain how a character was unlikable, how that
affects the reading experience, and why that may or
may not have been the author's intent
DO NOT: Generalize and provide vague DO: Use specific examples from the text (including
reasons behind your Analysis quotes, if significant).
DO NOT: Make superficial, obvious insights DO: Think deeply and look closely into the work.
