INTRODUCTION
 Hydropower is currently the
dominant renewable energy
source accounting for about
18% of the world total
electricity supply.
 It is the use of water to
generate electricity, typically
through the use of dam or other
structure that impounds water
and use its flow or potential
energy to drive a turbine or
generator.
3
INTRODUCTION CONT’D
 Hydro potential energy is
the energy store in the body
of water due to it's
elevation ,the higher the
water is above the sea level
the higher the potential
energy it has, that can be
converted to electricity by
running the water through
turbine
4
PROBLEM STATEMENT
The River Wuru in Kwara State, Nigeria is an untapped source of hydropower, and

there is a need to evaluate its potential for power generation. Thereby improve the

quality of life for people living in the area.

5
Aim
The aim of this study is limited to evaluation of hydro
potential energy of River Wuru in Kwara State.
Objective
Estimation of potential head of the river using GIS
techniques.
Prediction of average discharge of the river using selected
modelling tools.
Evaluation of hydro-potential energy of the river.

6
Justification of the study
Due to lack of insufficient power supply in the case study it is
essential to evaluate its potential in assessing electricity supply.

Scope of Study
It is limited to evaluation of hydro potential energy of River
wuru in kwara state.
Hydrological models would be developed to predict the stream
flow, estimation of the head and to estimate the hydro potential
energy of the river. 7

that the River could be a feasible site for
small hydropower development having
satisfied the head and discharge

DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA
 River Wuru is located in Kwara
State, near the north border with
Niger State. It flows through the
south and east passing through
many Towns and villages.
 The river is located at latitude 8'
49'' 0' and longitude 3'0'' 0 and
made up of low land, with
seasonal climate of rainy and dry
season.
 Occupations in this area include
fishing and farming due to the
availability of water for irrigation
purposes during dry season. 10

ANTICIPATED RESULT
At the end of the research, this are the following expected result.

The differences in elevation between the head of the

river, which gives the estimate of the potential head will be
archived.
Modelling and prediction of average discharge of river wuru
would be accomplish.
The quantity of potential power that can be generated from
the river will be obtain.
