Introduction
Welcome to Unibeton Ready Mix Health and Safety Dept.

Introduction - why are we here?


To make you aware of the hazards associated with our company.

The control measures in place to eliminate or minimise the risk of injury


to the workforce, general public and the environment.

The rules under which you will work when on site or in the office.
Objectives

To work within Unibeton Ready Mix without

• Harming the public, visitors or anybody involved in work onsite or in the


office.
• Creating a nuisance/inconvenience to the local residents.
• Damage to the plant / machinery.
• Harming of the environment.

How can we do this…….

Through teamwork and education as we all need each other to get the job
done safely, then ideally we can complete the job on time, deliver a high
quality product in a Safely high quality Environment.

Environmental Policy

• We are committed to protecting the health and


safety of all people working at or visiting our
sites.
• We plan, manage, conduct and supervise all our
work in compliance with legislation and best
practice.
• Through continuous training we ensure that all
workers have a clear understanding of their
responsibilities along with that of the company.

Health and Safety
• Create an injury free Environment.
• Ensure 100% participation, consultation and
communication with the employees in all the Health
and Safety activities and programs.
• Achieve the target of Lost Time Frequency Rate of less
then 1.0
• Perform monthly Health checkup’s for Unibeton
personnel's in all batching plants.
Environment
• A pollution free Environment.
• Ensure 100% participation, consultation and
communication with the employees in all the Health
and Safety activities and programs.
• Achieve Environment Excellence
General HSE Rules
• HSE Orientation is Mandatory for all new employees and
ex leave employees.
• PPE provided by Employer must be worn at all times.
• Adhere to the Safety signs posted.
• Speed limit is 10 km/h in side the plant areas and as
required by project client site requirements.
• Every activity should have an approved method
statement & Activity Hazard Assessment (AHA).
• All work related incidents (injuries, illnesses, fires, vehicle
accidents or any other incidents no mater how slight,
shall be reported to the area HSE Representative with in
24 hours.
• All Environmental spills/ releases, no mater how small,
shall be reported to the HSE department.

Emergency Response
Make alarm & contact emergency services

STOP everything, switch of any live equipment,


& proceed to the closest dedicated assembly
Point

Do not run, stay calm & follow the instructions of


your Fire warden

Remain at the assembly point until otherwise told


Wait until you receive the all clear signal
Emergency Procedure

Upon discovering of an emergency incident/ fire


• Stay calm.
• Raise the alarm, inform all personnel in the vicinity of the
incident.
• Contact Safety Team / Fire Marshal.
• Contact Emergency Services.
• Provide clear and concise details of the emergency.
• Only tackle fire if it is safe to do so and you have been
trained.
• Leave workplace/ exit building following Evacuation
Procedures.

Drugs and Alcohol

• Any persons caught in possession of or under


the influence of drugs or alcohol will be removed
from site.
• If you are on drugs for any medical reason,
please inform your supervisor at once.
Personal Protective Equipment

• Look after your P.P.E. and always wear it when


required.
• Please ask your supervisor to supply these
items as and when required.
Vehicle Traffic Control
• Drivers of vehicles and construction equipment must
observe site traffic regulations and obey all site
signage.
• Observe speed limit (10km/h) in all plant areas.
• Seat belts must be worn.
• Park only in designated areas.
• Banks man to be used for reversing of all heavy
vehicles and those with restricted vision.
• No passengers unless permanent seating provided.
• Only suitably trained, certificated and appointed drivers
will be authorised to operate equipment.
Traffic Control
• Be alert to all moving vehicles at all times.
• Be alert to pedestrian movement around site.
• Never leave engine running in unmanned
vehicles.
• Do not park across emergency exits.
• Park only in designated parking areas
Accident/ Incident Reporting
• You MUST report all accidents, near misses and
dangerous occurrences promptly to your manager
and Safety Officer.
• You MUST report all personal injuries, regardless
how minor, to the First Aider.
• All Incidents will be investigated and lessons learned
shared with personnel to prevent recurrence.
• First aiders and location of first aid facilities will be
displayed in reception area.
• All environmental incidents MUST be reported to your
Environmental Department, for them to investigate.

Poor equipment, inadequate training, working environment


and sometimes poor attitude to safe working arrangements
but,

In nearly all situations poor behaviour is the common factor!

Health Hazards
• Chemical:
Includes any form of chemical such as compressed
gases, solvents, lead and others.
• Physical:
Includes noise, vibration, heat cold and radiation.
• Ergonomics:
Includes design of the workplace and jobs that involve
repetition, force and posture.
• Biological:
Includes organisms or toxic substances produced by
living organism that can cause illnesses or disease in
humans (e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and
insects).
Safety Hazards
• Machine:
Includes hazards from moving parts like rotating
shafts, belts, pulleys, blades and saws.
• Energy:
Includes pneumatic or hydraulic pressure, steam,
heat and electricity.
• Material Handling:
Includes manual and mechanical handling (e.g.
lifting, lift trucks, conveyors).
• Work Practices:
Includes failure to have or follow safe work
practices.

Environment Hazards

Some hazards are created by the work


environment. Look for:

• Condition of all surfaces where people walk


or where things are placed.
• Over-crowding and poor ventilation.
• Poor lighting, extreme temperatures and
noise.
• Poor housekeeping.

Spill Response
In the event of a spill:

STOP STOP WORK, PREVENT anymore from spilling. Eliminate all sources of ignition.

Contain the spills using bunds, absorbent materials or sand, cover any nearby drains,
CONTAIN
protect any nearby watercourses.

Notify your supervisor or Environmental Department of the material


NOTIFY spilt, quantity, location of spill, and any action taken.
