MODULE 1

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT:
MEANING CONCEPTS AND APPROACHES
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

 The process of growth and change that takes place between

birth and maturity. It is the expansion of human's potential, an
increase of choices and opportunities and fulfillment of human
rights. Human development also describes as the growth of
humans throughout their lifespan, from conception to death.
THESE ARE THE STAGES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Two approaches to
human
development
1. TRADITONAL
 In contrast , if you believe
that even in adulthood
development change take
places as it does during
childhood
2 .Life-span development .

 Explore how we change and

grow from conception to
death.

Five characteristics of life-span development
1.DEVELOPMENT IS LIFELONG
 It does not end in adulthood . Ken and Naschielle will continue developing even in adulthood.

2.DEVELOPMENT IS PLASTIC
 Plasticity refers to the potential for change . Development is possible throughout the life-span .No one is too
old to learn . There is no such thing as “I am too old for that …”Neither Kenn or Naschielle will be too old learn
something.
3.DEVELOPMENT IS MULTIDIMENSIONAL
 Whatever your age , your body , your mind , your emotion, and relationship are changing and affecting each
other .
• Development is relatively orderly
The muscular control of the trunk and the arms comes earlier as
compared to the hands and fingers . This is the Proximodistal pattern.

• Cephalo-caudal pattern . During infancy , the greatest
growth always occurs at the top – the head – with physical
growth in size.

20XX presentation title 7

• Development takes place gradually
 Naschielle and Kenn won’t develop into pimply teenagers overnight . It takes years before they become
suddenly one . In fact that’s the way of nature.

4.DEVELOPMENT IS CONTEXTUAL
 The developmental contextual view of human development: Parent-child relations, and interpersonal and
institutional networks, are embedded in and influenced by particular community, societal, cultural, and
designed and natural environments,

5.DEVELOPMENT INVOLVES GROWTH, MAINTENANCE AND REGULATION

 Development Involves Growth, Maintenance, Regulation of loss: as individuals age into middle and late
adulthood, the maintenance and regulation of loss in their capacities take center stage away from growth.
