Function of the Skeletal System - Support
Your skeleton is the underlying framework
of your body and provides several
mechanical and physiological functions.

1) Support – your skeleton provides the

framework for the soft tissue of your
body and therefore also provides the
overall shape of your body.

Protection
2) Protection – another very important factor of your skeleton
Benefits to the athlete?
is protection. Your skeleton protects the vital tissues and
organs of the body.

In your groups, discuss which bones provide protection for

certain areas

- (Cranium) protects the brain

● Ribs protects the heart and lungs
● Vertebral column protects the spinal cord
● Pelvis protects your reproductive and abdominal organs
Attachment for Skeletal Muscle
3) The skeleton provides attachment
(anchor points) for skeletal muscles that
allow us to move. Muscles are attached to
bone through tendons

Leverage/Movement
4) Our muscles and skeleton work
together to create leverage and this
leverage creates movement and joints
which allows us to walk, run move our
arms

The length of our bones determine our

height and how much force we can

6) The bones that make up your skeleton are not
solid, if they were then your skeleton would be very
heavy and many things we do may not be possible.
● The centre of your bones has bone marrow in
them and this marrow is fed by blood vessels.
● The marrow of your long bones has a very
important function as they are continually creating
red and white blood cells. Benefits to the athlete?

Store of Minerals
7) The bones of our skeleton also

act as a store for minerals such as
calcium and phosphorus that are
essential for bone growth and good
health.
● The bones act as a reservoir for
these minerals which are
released into the bloodstream as
needed to maintain a balance of
minerals in our body.
