The Different Techniques
and Literary Devices in
Drama
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, learners should be
ale to:
 Describe what is drama and its nature,
and
 Identify the different techniques and
literary devices in drama.
DRAMA
-a literary work that’s intended
to be presented on a stage in
front of an audience or a group
of audience.
DRAMA
The type of literature that takes
advantage of people’s visual
and auditory senses
DRAMA
It is not limited to what you
read and imagine like in
poetry and fiction, but it
brings your imagination to
life.
DRAMA
Playwrights/Dramatists use
many techniques and literary
devices to make the story
more exciting and interesting.
DRAMA
These techniques help bring
the story to life and arouse
the intended emotions in the
audience or readers.
DRAMA
A good play is one that captures the
audience’s/readers ‘heart and
attention while leaving important
lessons or realizations about society,
family, love and other significant
issues we deal with every single day.
Soliloquy
This is a speech by a single actor
who is alone on stage. The
character speaks out his/her
thoughts aloud for the audience
to know and understand what
he/she is thinking.
(The speaker is definitely alone,
speaking to him/herself)
The class will be divided into three
groups by counting off from 1-3,
and each group will be given
different task. They will then
choose a reporter/performer to
discuss their work. Each group
will have a time limit of 5 minutes
to complete the task.
Group 1
This group will be given at least 2
minutes to research about Monologue.
They will then present to the group what
they’ve researched. The teacher will also
provide a short script/dialogue which is
an example of a monologue and the group
will also choose a performer to act the
said scene given by the teacher. This is
for the class to identify its special feature
and how it differs among the rest of the
techniques and devices.
Group 2
This group will be given a definition of
Foreshadowing. First they have to read and
analyse it, then they will share their
understanding in class and identify the
special feature of foreshadowing that
makes it different from the other
techniques. This group will also need to
present a short video clip from the internet
that shows example of foreshadowing and
explain it to the class. The group should
choose 1 or 2 presenters.
Group 3
This group will be given 5
examples of lines/script and all
they have to do is to identify
which particular script uses
Imagery. They will then present
to class what made them think
that this script/line uses the
imagery technique. The group
will also choose a member to
perform the lines orally.
Monologue
This refers to a long speech made by
one actor which may be delivered alone
or in the presence of others. This
generally reveals previous events and
explain a character’s choice of action.
(Long speech that is spoken to someone else
and the character may or may not be alone on
stage)
Foreshadowing
This is the playwright’s use
of “hints” or “clues” which
prepares the audience/reader
for future events or the
outcome.
Imagery
This is creating images in the
audience’s/readers’ mind through the use of
vivid words. The use of figurative language is
a good technique to stir and challenge the
readers’ imagination. This can be achieved by
using figures of speech like hyperbole,
metaphor, simile, paradox, personification,
oxymoron, metonymy and many others.

What are the different techniques
and literary devices in drama?
How does each technique differ from
one another?

literary works? (Poetry, Fiction etc.)
