What is a sentence?

►set/group of words that contains a subject (S) and


a verb (V) and a complete thought.

►sentences always start with


►A capital/uppercase letter

►And end with one of three things:


►Period (.) (statement)
►Question mark (?) (question)
►Exclamation point (!) (exclamation)
Fragments
►What are fragments?
►Incomplete sentences, missing one or more
parts: subject, verb, or it is not a complete
thought

►Examples:
►I to the movies yesterday.
►Left the party at 11PM.
►Studied so hard last night.
►She when he told her a joke.
Run-ons
►What are run-ons?
►Sentences that are too long. They need to be
separated by a period (.) or they need to have a
comma (,) and the words and, but, so, or
because

►Examples:
►I had to get some veggies at the store I forgot to
get some trash bags, too.
►Sally ate dinner so fast Sally felt quite sick.
►Fred decided to go to the concert Lily decided
to go to the match.
