Move it!

How substances move into,

around and out of our cells.
Idea: Have you ever thought about this?

Joshua 6:20

When the trumpets sounded, the

army shouted, and at the sound of
the trumpet, when the men gave a
loud shout, the wall collapsed; so
everyone charged straight in, and
they took the city.
Objectives
• Describe the features of certain specialized cells
• Describe osmosis, diffusion and active transport
• Identify the factors that affect movement of particles
• Identify examples of osmosis, diffusion and active transport
in the human body
Cell review
• Cells are the building blocks of living things.
• There are two main types of cells – plant cells and
animal cells.
• Cells are made up of “little organs” called organelles
which have specific functions.
Microbe review
• Consist mainly of bacteria, viruses and fungi
• Contain some of the structures of animal and plant
cells
• Contain many of their own unique features
Different strokes for different folks

• All plant and animal cells do not look alike.

• Cells are designed to perform specialized jobs. And
can take a variety of shapes.
• Tr: Toutes les cellules végétales et animales ne se ressemblent pas.

• Les cellules sont conçues pour effectuer des tâches spécialisées. Et peuvent prendre une variété de formes.

Water can enter the cell: osmosis
Water moves from an
area of high
concentration
(outside the cell) to
an area of low
concentration (inside
the cell). What
happens to the size of
the cell?
Examples of osmosis in plants and animals

Water enters
your intestinal
cells via
osmosis then
other cells in
the body.
When the
kidney filters
the blood,
water is
reabsorbed by
osmosis into
the body as
needed.
Water moves by osmosis from
the soil in to the root hair cell.
Why do plants need
water?
Water moves
by osmosis
from cell to cell
inside the plant
to reach the
xylem. This
also happens in
other parts of
the plant.
Have you
ever seen a
fruit or
vegetable
vendor do
this?

What are
they doing
and why?
Osmosis is a type of diffusion.

• Diffusion is passive, meaning it requires no energy.

• Particles, which are always in motion, move from an
area of high concentration to an area of low
concentration.
• This can occur in liquids or gases.
