Warm Up

In this unit, you will produce pieces of writing based on the idea of the
Strangest Shop in the World. The best pieces of writing will include
imaginative ideas about:

What the Strangest Shop in the World would sell;

where it would be in the world;
what the shopkeeper would be like;
what it would look like inside.
Warm up for the start of this unit by thinking of some truly strange and
bizarre things that may only be found in the Strangest Shop in the World -
and we’re not talking about anything that might be found in the shops you
might normally go in.

Here are just a few examples…

A table made from the eye of a giant squid
A jar of second-hand dreams
A ‘shrinking-ray gun’
A pint of the blackest darkness
A slice of good fortune that never happened
Warm Up
Choose your favourite strange object and add it to a class list as you play: I
went to the Strangest Shop in the World and I bought…
1St player - I went to the Strangest Shop in the World and I bought… a slice
of good fortune that never happened.
2nd player adds their own choice to the list: I went to the Strangest Shop in
the World and I bought… a slice of good fortune that never happened and a
pint of the blackest darkness.
3rd player repeats the whole list so far and then adds their own choice: I
went to the Strangest Shop in the World and I bought a slice of good fortune
that never happened, a pint of the blackest darkness and a table made from a
giant squid’s eye.
Repeat until someone forgets what to say.
Using Your Senses
Close your eyes and think about what it would be like inside the Strangest
Shop in the World.

What can you see?

What can you smell?
What can you hear?
What can you feel?
What can you taste?
