ALLIANCE
INTRODUCTION
The Philippine-American relationship is rooted in a
complex history shaped by colonization, war, and
alliance. Beginning with the Spanish-American War
in 1898, the Philippines transitioned from Spanish to
American rule. Over the years, this connection has
evolved, marked by collaboration during World War
II and the subsequent establishment of an enduring
strategic partnership. Today, diplomatic, economic,
and cultural ties continue to define this bilateral
relationship.
HOW DID THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE
PHILIPPINES AND AMERICAN STARTED?
The relationship between the Philippines and the United States started primarily for the
following reasons:
4. Mutual Defense Treaty (1951): The signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty
(MDT) in 1951 formalized the commitment to mutual defense between the Philippines and
the United States. It underscored the collaborative approach to security challenges in the
Asia-Pacific region.
2. Military Alliance: The Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) signed in 1951 remains a
cornerstone of the relationship. Both countries engage in joint military exercises, and the
U.S. has provided military assistance to enhance the Philippines' defense capabilities.

3. Economic Partnership: Economic relations involve trade, investment, and
development assistance. The U.S. is a major trading partner and a source of foreign direct
investment for the Philippines. Economic cooperation extends to areas such as
infrastructure development and business partnerships.
