Datasets: creation of cartoon “emotions”

The dataset consists of 10 k images, i.e., 28 animations

of Tom and Jerry. The dataset generated from the MaskR-CNN
model is annotated into four emotions.

These emotions are Happy, Angry, Sad, and Surprise. For both
cartoon characters, around 1000 images depicting each out
of the four emotions were manually segregated. In total,
8113 images (or masks, of size 256 9 256) were used for
the purpose of training.

Digital Assistant in Class
From: “human – computer interaction”
Stuart K. Card, Allen Newell, and Thomas P. Moran . 1983, The Psychology of Human–Computer
Interaction.
Unlike other tools with specific and limited uses, computers have many uses which often
involve an open-ended dialogue between the user and the computer.
Suchman, Lucy (1987). Plans and Situated Action. The Problem of Human-Machine Communication.
New York, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

To: “human – machine communication”.

Machine to human combination is a form of communication in which humans co-work with
Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and other machines as opposed to utilizing them as tools or
devices.

and Ourselves. (Volume editor) TextbookXX, Media and Communication, Series: Digital Formations .

Combined sources in class: teacher and digital
assistant
• Students use digital assistants everyday with their mobile devices
• Structured use of an AI system like digital assistant in class was a big
surprise for them
• Easy to use by educators
• Several free tools available like Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana
etc.
• We used Alexa because of the connection with Amazon database and
Alexa Skills.
Why to incorporate a Digital Assistant in class?
• Every student who is now at school will work, interact and
communicate with a “machine” (AI, robot, IoT cyborg, etc)
• It’s a popular application of AI - part of our everyday life
• Measurable
• Value for money school project
• Easy to use even without IT background
• Attractive to students
• It is easy to design sustainability projects in class with a DA
“Alexa our new friend in class”

• Design of lesson plans

• 8 weeks learning plans within the EFL class for the 2 nd
grade of High
School students
• Introduce Alexa as the class new friend and assistant
• Allow students to interact
• Surprise but also curiosity among class members
Basic findings (1)
• Questionnaires
• Observation qualitative data
• Alexa archives
Basic findings

• Students were surprised but also happy to have alexa in class

• They were competing Alexa
• They were trying to find mistakes
• They were trying to find questions Alexa couldn’t answer
• They were polite
• They were asking for Alexa to be there everyday in class
Sample questions

• How old are you Alexa?

• Do you have brothers or sisters?
• Are you envy of Google Assistant?
• Which is better, you or Siri?
• When is your birthday?
• Do you know the number of sand grains in the world?
• How many starts are our there?
DA new projects in Class

• Collaborative methodology lesson plans

• Energy efficiency in every class with help of Alexa and IoT
• Teach her Greek!

Introduction
• A facial recognition system is a technology capable of matching
a human face from a digital image or a video frame against a
database of faces, typically employed to authenticate users
through ID verification services, works by pinpointing and
measuring facial features from a given image.

We will use betaceapi to search for faces in
photos.

Step : select processing
options

Step 2: upload image and

28
Activity
Part 1:

• Can the app find every face?

• Let’s try to confuse it?
• When is more difficult to detect a face?

Part 2:

• What can the app tell us about age and other characteristics?
• Try different photos of the same person is the information the same?
• When a person looks younger?

29
Activity
Part 3:

• Try a family picture or picture of people with different ages?

• Is the app recognize people age correctly?
• Is the age difference of people relatively correct?

Part 4:

• What if we put a famous person photo?

• Have the app recognise him/her.
• Did it work?
• How you think it did it?

How it works
• Open the app Face recognition

• Camera switch the front and back camera

• The first time you must put your name by tap and type pic1

• After that simply open the app and it will know you pic 2

33
Activity
• Now it is your turn

• First get familiar with the app

• Next you must introduce yourself to it

• After all, have been introduced check if

still remember everyone.

35
Summary
Collectively, the facial recognition market is soaring.

Facial recognition technology has improved dramatically over the past

few years.

Either live or from photos as we see in our examples. Next steps will be
even more accurate or ignore “obstacles” like glasses or mask
