What kind of a book is Martin Eden?

Martin Eden is a novel written by Jack London in 1909.The story revolves around the
young prolaterian Martin Eden's life story of changing from a carefree but hardworking
person to a full-time author, upon his meeting with a bourgeois girl Ruth. After these
events,he started to become obsessed with being worthy to the bourgeois class.
• However, his obsession of becoming an author was never well received from
anybody he knew, especially Ruth. But through his willpower and determination,he
was willing to take all the risks and face with the obstacles, just to get to Ruth. He
saw her,and everybody in the bourgeois class as a symbol to be inspired,as a divine
force came from the sky. However, his thoughts changed when he deeply learned
their insights.
• After he started to see their lives and thinking styles in the first hand,he started to
look down on them, and thought of them as mindless zealots who just follow any idea
they grew up with without hesitation. He realized that they are closed to new
ideas, and insist on anything they have been taught to believe. This pushed him even
further to become an indvidiualistic person(which he already was one) and look
down on governmental belief system.
• For a poor-tempered and quick-to-react person,Martin Eden was quite patient in his
quest, actually.Afterall,he finally came together with the love of his
life,Ruth, who loved him in return. However, she was continiously urging him to find a
job, which Martin displeases. After some unlucky turn of events, the two broke up.And
Martin had hard times after their seperation, and no,it was not just the heartache of
love.
• Martin Eden suffered from having hard times,as he couldn't eat properly,he couldn't
sleep properly, but his willpower never let these obstacles win,and thus he never
gave up.And he reached to his goal in the end,he became a successfull author, his
name was all over the magazines, but he didn't feel anything exciting about it.He
became indifferent to everything,actually.
