FIRE

INTENSITY
LEVEL
WHAT IS FIRE
INTENSITY?
Fire intensity, expressed in
kilowatts per meter (kW/m), is the
amount of energy released from each
meter of head fire edge. One kW/m is
equivalent to the energy released by a
small bar radiator. Fire intensity
depends upon how much fuel is burnt
and how fast it burns.
Severe bushfires, such as the
Victorian Black Saturday fires, can
generate intensities in excess of 100,000
kW/m, whereas prescribed fires are
usually less than 500 kW/m. Only
bushfires of less than 2,000 kW/m can
be safely and effectively suppressed by
people and machinery working directly
on the flaming edge of the fire.

FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 2 Restrictions: EXTREME

LEVEL 1 Restrictions: VERY HIGH
HIGH
MODERATE
LOW
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LOW

Fires will not usually result from campfires

or smoking. It is still important to be
careful and fire safe.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

MODERATE

Fires can start from most ignition sources,

but the potential for serious damage is
reduced, Please be careful with your
fires, barbeques, and smoking materils
FIRE DANGER ALERT

HIGH

Vegetation can ignite readily and fire can

easily spread. Unattended campfires
and smoking materials (cigarettes, etc.)
can quickly create a serious threat
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 1 Restrictions: VERY HIGH

What might it cause wildfire: Fires can

start easily from matches or glowing
embers.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 1 Restrictions: VERY HIGH

How might it spread: Immediately after

fire start. It will spread rapidly and
increase quickly in intensity.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 1 Restrictions: VERY HIGH

What you can do: Smoke only with in

vehicles and developed recreational
areas. Smoking outside these areas
( Such as on trails) may put visitors at
risk. Likewise, limit campfires to
designated campgrounds, picnic areas,
or developed recreational areas.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 2 Restrictions: EXTREME

What might cause wildfire: Fires can start

easily from matches and embers but
also from mechanical devices such as
cars. Fires that occurs under extreme
fire conditions can spread rapidly and
be extremely dangerous to life and
property.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 2 Restrictions: EXTREME

How might it spread: Fires will spread

with very high intensity and will be too
fast to outrun. Homes in the path of the
fire will likely be destroyed and lives
may be lost.
FIRE DANGER ALERT

LEVEL 2 Restrictions: EXTREME

What you can do: Smoke only with in

vehicles and developed recreational
areas. Open fires and barbeques are not
permitted anywhere in the park because
the smallest ember or spark can cause
fire.
