Densitometer – Operating
Principle
The density meter continuously measures the
density of the liquids or slurries

Sensing Elements
• Drive coil excited with an electric current
• This causes sensor tubes to oscillate
• Electronic amplifier amplifies the pick-up coil voltage signal and adjusts
phase and gain to produce a current thru’ the drive coil
• This current maintains the sensor tubes at their natural resonance
• Time period of the resonance is proportional to the total mass of the
tubes (a constant) plus the process fluid inside
• Changes in density of the process fluid will change the mass of the
tubes plus fluid, as well as the resonant frequency.

Densitometer – Operating
Principle
Temperature & Pressure Compensation
• Effects of temperature and pressure on the sensing element cannot
be entirely eliminated

• They can be greatly reduced using corrective methods

• Is characterized to allow temperature and pressure coefficients

to be applied

• Fitted with a precision PRT temperature element allowing accurate

correction of both instrument.

• Pressure compensation is done via a preset pressure or a live

pressure input into density converter or flow computer

Densitometer – Installation
Requirements
Vertical
Recommended orientation of the density meter is vertical with
flow upwards
This maximize the immunity to the formation of
gaseous pockets.

Horizontal
If density meter required to be mounted horizontally, the flow
must be  5 L/min to avoid trapped gas bubbles causing
unsteady density measurements.

Densitometer – Installation
Requirements

Pressure
To maintain full line pressure in the sensor, flow
restrictors, flow control valves or pressure
control valves should be fitted downstream of
the density meter. For this will prevent formation
of gas bubbles due to pressure drop occurring
upstream of the instrument

Principle Operation 1
• The vibrating element is
caused to resonate.
• Liquid mass loads the Liquid
resonator.
• As density increases the Vibrating tube
resonant frequency 7835, 7845, 7846, 7847
decreases.

Physical Checks
- Examine transducer & its mounting bracket, pipe coupling & electrical
cables for signs of damage & corrosion
 Calibration Checks
Carry calibration checks – thru’ Ambient Checks
- Isolate, drain & if necessary, disconnect the transducer from the pipeline
- Clean & dry the wetted parts of the transducer & leav
them open to the ambient air

- Apply power to the instrument & check the time period of the output signal
agrees with the “ Air Check” figure shown in the calibration certificate, to
within the acceptable limits ( e.g 6 ns or 500 ns for the E.G units)

(Some variation of the 2 figures to be expected due to changes in ambient air

conditions. The density indication if using the K0, K1& K2 factors will be about 0.9
kg/cm3. This because the basic densi;ty equation has been optimized for the best
performance over the normal operating density range.)

 Remedial Servicing
- Falls on 2 categories : Electrical & Mechanical
a) On Advance units :
Checks voltage between terminals 7 & 8 should be 10 ~ 20 vdc
b) Standard Units
Carry out power supply & current consumption testat the transducer
terminals
These should give :
17mA +/-1mA at 15.5~33 vdc ( 7835/45/46/47)
75mA +/-2mA at 15.5~33 vdc ( 7845/47 E.G units)
( * Remove power supply to the transducer. If current consumption is suspect,
replace the transducer amplifier)
c) Drive coil
Standard Units ( Terminal 7~8, resistance should be 95 +/- 5 ohms at
20
degree Celsius)

[File Name or Event]

Emerson Confidential
27-Jun-01, Slide 46
Densitometer ( General Maintenance)
d) Pickup Coils( terminal 1~2 advance units, 9~10 standard units)
Measure resistance of pickup coil, should be 95 +/- 5 ohms at 20 degree
Celsius.

e) Standard Units
Check 100 ohm PRT terminal at 11~12 ( ensure 3 & 6 are disconnected)

The value of the element resistance is temperature dependant.

Check the continuity between 11 & 3, 11 & 4, 12 & 5 & 12 to 6.

 Mechanical Servicing
- Comprises of keeping the inner surface of the vibrating tube clean of
deposition & corrosion
- Deposition must be removed using suitable solvent.
