SOCIAL ETIQUETTE

AIM OF THE MODULE
• To acquaint the probationary officers with the
conventional rules of social behaviour and
professional conduct.

• To enable the officers to carry themselves as


well groomed, dignified and disciplined
officers.

• To bring about an attitudinal change.

DEFINITION OF ETIQUETTE

The conduct of procedure required by good


breeding on prescribed authority to be
observed in social life.

WHAT IS ETIQUETTE ?
Etiquette is a code of conduct, both written
and unwritten, for basic behaviour that is
socially expected from individuals in society
based on cultural norms. This behaviour
includes the proper way of socially interacting
with others, guidelines for handling yourself in
public and the manner of dress that is
considered acceptable on various occasions
and circumstances.

Good Manners and Etiquette lend confidence
and charm to an officer’s personality. They
help smoothen the sharp edges of authority
and ease the course of personal relations.

A FEW IMPORTANT POINTS
• Introductions and greetings

 Older persons to be introduced first to younger


persons

 Females to be introduced first to males

 Senior colleagues to be introduced first to


junior colleagues

MAKING PHONE CALLS
• If you are calling someone directly you would
be on the line first whether you are senior or
junior and in your case you would be junior to
everyone.
• If you are calling through your P.A., a junior
person should be brought on line first and in
case of a senior or a person of equal status you
should come on line first.

• If you are calling a person at home always
make sure that it is a matter of extreme
importance which cannot be delayed till the
next day. Be careful about the time. Dial the
phone yourself as your P.A. may not be very
comfortable in talking to the family members
of the officer who might pick up the phone.

• Avoid to call senior officers on their cell
phone.
• In your case, please do not call the faculty on
their cell phones unless the issue is of extreme
importance.

WALKING TOGETHER

• If a man & woman are walking together, men


should always walk on the left side. Similarly,
if you are walking with your senior, always be
on his left side.

PASSING THROUGH DOORS
• We allow women to pass through doors first
but if it is a heavy door the man should move
ahead to open it. Generally, if a person has
passed through a door, he should hold it for the
person behind him, particularly if she is a
woman struggling with a stroller. It is rude to
shut the door on someone’s face.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

• In public transport it is always courteous to


give your seat to a woman or an older person
or a handicapped person.

ELEVATOR ETTIQUETTE

• In elevators and lifts it is always better if you


allow the person standing close to the elevator
to go inside first and hold the door. Similarly,
whosoever, man or woman, standing, nearest
to the door can go out first.

POSTURE

• Posture should always be back straight, chin a


little up, shoulders back, abdomen, stomach
and knees relaxed. Slouching, sinking into the
chair should be avoided.

CHEWING GUM

• Chewing gum is a habit that destroys your


personality completely. If done unobtrusively,
it may not make a difference but if done with
open mouth, smacks, crackles and pops, it is
very distasteful.

TALKING TO SENIORS
• When talking to seniors, it is very important
that you are very respectful and most
importantly your hand should never go inside
your pocket, whether of trouser or coat. In
both an informal setting as well as a formal
one if you are sitting and your senior asks you
a question while he is standing, you must also
stand up to respond. In a class you should
always stand up to ask a question or respond to
one. 16
RESPECT FOR LADIES
Please respect ladies around you not only in
the Academy, your colleagues but wherever
you come across them. From a lady’s point of
view, respectful men are very popular. It is
very important to rise for the ladies whenever
they enter the room. It is also very important
that you rise for the faculty and greet them
whether you know them or not.

ADDRESSING THE FACULTY
While addressing the faculty before starting a
presentation or in welcome speeches at
functions, always address the senior most as
“Honourable (designation)” and the remaining
faculty members as “Respected faculty
members”, or mention all faculty members
without missing any names.

PUBLIC CLEANLINESS

Awareness to keep our environment clean is


very important. Wrappers and cigarette butts
must not be thrown.

BEING ORGANIZED

Things should be kept in order. Whenever you


are in the class room, mess, café or in your
offices, be organized.

BEHAVIOUR WITH SUPPORT STAFF

Your behaviour with the support staff should


be exemplary. A person is always judged by
the way he treats the marginalized segments of
the society and this is a reflection of his
upbringing.

USE OF PROPER LANGUAGE

Your language should always be very polite, to


the point, crisp and graceful. Talking too
much means that you know very little.

DEMEANOUR

Your demeanour should be very decent and


elegant. In social gatherings try to mix and
mingle with people even if you have met them
for the first time.

CONVERSATIONS

You must inter into conversation with the


person sitting next to you in a social gathering,
formal dinners or get togethers. As a general
rule, listen twice as much as you talk. Be
polite, talk about general things.

AVOID GOSSIPING

Do not gossip, avoid personal remarks and


back biting which are negative habits. Do not
ridicule others, senior or juniors. Do not
always talk about yourself, your problems,
achievements and experiences and let other
people talk about themselves.

SLEEPING & YAWNING

Sleeping and yawning gives a very bad


impression about a person’s personality. It
shows that he is inattentive, not interested in
work, is not well prepared and has a very
casual attitude towards work & office. Same
is true for sleeping and yawning during
lectures.

PUNCTUALITY

Biometric devices have been installed in the


Academy to make you aware of the
importance of punctuality, which cannot be
overemphasized.

SMOKING

Smoking is harmful and you all know well the


harmful effects of this bad habit on your
health. It is your individual decision but avoid
smoking in prohibited places. You can smoke
in places where it is allowed but do not litter
and completely put out a cigarette before
throwing out the butt.

USE OF ‘SORRY’ & ‘THANK YOU’

If you know you are wrong do not hesitate in


saying “Sorry”. Acknowledge even small
favours of others by saying “thank you”.

Academy:
MEN Week days (except Fridays)
Lounge suit with official necktie with black/brown
closed shoes and socks.
Fridays
White shalwar kameez with band collar waistcoat (dark
grey/navy blue/black/dark brown) and black/brown
closed shoes with socks.

sleeves and dupatta.

• Pyjamas, trousers, jeans and variations

• Wear dark suits


• Suits & shirts must be well fitted, clean &
neatly ironed
• Collar must be buttoned
• Shirts should be of light colours
• Length of tie should be till the buckle of the
belt
