Definition
A sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great
destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or
volcanic action.

What are the key characteristics and
hazards of earthquakes?
1. Two plates push into each other/or slide past, both plates are under pressure.

2. The pressure builds up and one plate gives

way and the pressure is released in waves,
called Seismic Waves

3. Seismic Waves travel through the Earth in

all different directions shaking everything, this
is called an Earthquake.

4. The focus is where the Earthquake started

from underground and the epicentre is the
same point but on the surface
AfL
As plates slide past each other, they get _______, huge ______ builds up.

Suddenly rock gives way, ______ is released, _______ waves of energy travel in all
directions (the __________ is the vibrations they cause)

● _______: point where the rock gives way

● _______: directly above focus on earth’s surface
● As rocks settle there will be lots of __________.

Epicentre locked focus seismic tension aftershocks tension

What factors cause different
earthquake effects?
AfL: What causes different effects?
✘ Depth of focus
✘ Magnitude
✘ Duration
✘ Distance from epicentre
✘ Underlying geology
✘ Other factors including human factors Make sure you have this

on how volcanoes and earthquakes are measured.

Volcanic Explosivity Index
Measures the volume and height of ash following a volcanic
eruption.
From 1-8.
Also, considers other volcanic characteristics such as tephra.
How are earthquakes recorded?
Earthquakes are recorded on a seismograph. The print
out tells us how powerful the earthquake was and
how long it lasted.
Richter Scale
Moment Magnitude Scale

Measured using a scale from 1 – 10

Records the size of the largest seismic wave.
Amount of rock movement/ slippage along the area of the
fault.
Used for earthquakes larger than 3.5 magnitude.
Mercalli scale

Measures the effect of an

earthquake on people and
structures.

A 12 point scale describing

the physical effects of an
earthquake.
