WHAT IS A CONIC SECTION?
•A conic section, also known as conic,
according to Apollonius’ study is a
curve formed by the intersection of a
plane and a double right circular cone.
• The cone has two nappes: the upper
nappe and the lower nappe, that
extend infinitely in both directions.
•A line lying entirely on the cone is
called generator of the cone, and all
generators of a cone pass through its
vertex, which is the only point where
the two nappes intersect.
Trivia

• Appolonius
of Perga, (born c. 240
bc, Perga Pamphylia, Anatolia –
died c. 190, Alexandria, Egypt),
mathematician, known by his
contemporaries as “the Great
Geometer”, whose treatise Conics
is one of the greatest scientific
works from the ancient world.
