Introduction

In rural communities like Bario near KL, Malaysia, limited telecommunications

infrastructure hinders access to essential services. To address this challenge, our
project focuses on deploying a wireless LAN at the Bario community telecentre
and clinic. By enhancing connectivity, we aim to empower residents and bridge
the digital divide.
Project Overview
Our project aims to address telecommunications challenges in the Bario
community, Malaysia, by deploying a wireless LAN infrastructure at the telecentre
and clinic.

The objectives include enhancing rural connectivity, improving access to essential

services, and bridging the digital divide.

The scope involves deploying, integrating, and securing the network, while the
significance lies in empowering residents, facilitating healthcare and education
services, and fostering economic growth.
Project Scope

Our project entails deploying a wireless LAN infrastructure at both the Bario
community telecentre and clinic. This includes integrating the wireless network
with the existing wired LAN infrastructure, optimizing coverage and connectivity,
and implementing security measures to protect the network from unauthorized
access.

Our scope also encompasses ensuring seamless operation and maintenance of the
network to support the community's telecommunications needs effectively.
Site Survey
Bario Community Telecentre network has to distribute the wireless network through
the hill to the clinic so both places can communicate with each other. Because of that,
the wireless network standard should be a Local area Network. The local Area network
was chosen because the distance between Bario Telecentre and the clinic is only 100
meters. The standard used for the wireless LAN is IEEE 802.11ac. This standard has
an enhancement from the IEEE 802.11n in the physical layer to make a higher
throughput in the 5 GHz band. The communication between Telecentre and the clinic
might happen by sending and receiving the patient details in video such as
angiography, endoscopy, or even USG video. With this standard, video streaming
became easier because of the higher rates. The projection in the TV or LCD projector
for the patient examination process by the doctors became faster.
Floor Plan
Before doing the site survey, the system Analyst
needs to have the floor plan, to know the shape
and the layout of the building that will get the
wireless network installation. The floor plan is a
scale diagram of a room viewed from above.
This floor plan is required because it has so
many considerations for installing the Access
Point. The access point needs to be installed
properly to avoid a blank spot in the network.
Besides the floor plan, the network engineer
must know the electricity source in the building
to plug in the access point.

Hardware Requirements
To deploy a wireless LAN infrastructure at the Bario community telecentre and
clinic, careful consideration must be given to the selection of hardware and software
components.

Hardware Requirements:
Wireless LAN Deployment in Bario Telecentre and Clinic we have Chosen 3 types of
Devices i.e. Router, Switch, and Wireless Access Pont. We have 3 types of cable
gigabit ethernet cable for internal connection and serial cable for connection between
two routers and Fast ethernet Cable To connection PCs to switch.
Comparison Of all devices then choose the best one on the different factors such as
Functions, Range, Bandwidth, Latency, and Prices.
ISynology RT2600ac:

Synology RT2600ac is a dual-band Wi-Fi router that

operates on the Wi-Fi 5 (AC) standard, offering
theoretical speeds of up to 2.53Gbps. It is designed to
provide reliable wireless coverage for medium-sized
homes. The router features one Gigabit Ethernet WAN
port, three Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, and one USB
3.0 port for versatile connectivity options. Its
advanced features include VPN support and file-
sharing capabilities, making it suitable for users with
moderate needs. The Synology RT2600ac is known
for its user-friendly interface, making it easy to set up
and manage. It is priced at Rs. 26,512.
The Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Long Range (U6-LR)
access point:

The Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Long Range (U6-LR) access

point is a cloud-managed device designed for high-
performance wireless connectivity. It supports over
300 devices, offers long-range coverage, and delivers
dual-band Wi-Fi 6 speeds up to 2.4Gbps. Security
features include WPA3 encryption, Guest Wi-Fi, and
VLAN support. While basic management is cloud-
based, advanced features require a cloud key or
software controller. With PoE support and an estimated
price range of Rs. 12000 to Rs. 20000, it provides
excellent value for scalable and secure wireless
networking needs.
The Cisco Catalyst 3650-24PS Switch:

The Cisco Catalyst 3650-24PS Switch is a high-

performance networking solution designed for
enterprise environments. It offers 24 Gigabit Ethernet
ports, advanced features, scalability, security, and
performance suitable for various network functions.
With a forwarding bandwidth of up to 68 Gbps and
typically very low latency, it ensures efficient data
transmission with minimal delays. Priced at Rs.
15000, it provides excellent value for its capabilities,
making it a reliable and cost-effective choice for
enhancing enterprise network infrastructure.
Security Implementation

WPA2-PSK authentication in Cisco Packet Tracer is a simple yet effective method

for securing wireless networks. By using a shared passphrase, it encrypts data
transmissions and verifies user identities, ensuring that only authorized users can
access the network. This approach provides robust security, ease of
implementation, and resistance to unauthorized access attempts, making it a
reliable solution for network security in various environments.
Monitoring and Maintenance
Monitoring and maintenance of the wireless LAN infrastructure at the Bario
community telecentre and clinic involve ongoing tasks to ensure optimal performance
and reliability.

This includes regular monitoring of network traffic, signal strength, and device
connectivity to identify any potential issues or bottlenecks. Additionally, periodic
firmware updates and security patches should be applied to keep the network protected
from vulnerabilities and ensure compatibility with the latest standards.

Maintenance tasks may also include troubleshooting connectivity issues, performing

hardware diagnostics, and optimizing network configurations to improve overall
performance. It's essential to establish proactive monitoring and maintenance
procedures to minimize downtime and address any issues promptly, ensuring
uninterrupted connectivity for users at the telecentre and clinic.
Conclusion

In conclusion, the deployment of a wireless LAN infrastructure at the Bario

community telecentre and clinic holds significant promise in addressing
telecommunications challenges faced by rural communities. By enhancing
connectivity and access to essential services, such as healthcare and education, this
project aims to bridge the digital divide and empower residents with greater
opportunities for growth and development. With careful consideration of hardware,
software, and maintenance requirements, we can ensure the successful
implementation and long-term sustainability of the wireless network, thereby
fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for the Bario community.
