3. What classes do you have this week?

Vocabulary Warm Up
In your notebooks, you have three minutes to write down as many nouns,
verbs and adjectives as you can think of.

For example:
Nouns - car, house, tree
Verbs - play, talk, sleep
Adjectives - big, small, ugly

Teacher instructions: When the time is over, share

ideas with the class and students write down any new
words they didn’t have before.
Possessives: Nouns
With singular nouns, we add ’s to show possession.
For example: That’s John’s bike. He was riding his friend’s scooter.

With plural nouns, we add ’ to show possession.

For example: This is my parents’ fish. These are the ladies’ bags.

With irregular plural nouns, we use ’s.

Some examples of these nouns are children,
people, men, women…
For example: These are women’s socks.

We can use possessives to

avoid repeating words.
For example: “Is that Cody’s boat?”
“No, it’s Jaime’s.”
“Whose bag is this?” “It’s Ana’s”.
Possessives: Adjectives
We use possessive adjectives to show something belongs to somebody, for
example: “Whose is that turtle?” “It’s my turtle”.

We also use them for relations and friends, for example: “Her dad is a doctor”.

We can use them with parts of the body, for example: “Sergio has broken his
toe”.

Possessives: Pronouns
Possessive pronouns do not use
apostrophes (’).
For example, “Is that car ours?”. Possessive Possessive

We can use possessive pronouns
I My Mine
instead of a full phrase to avoid
repetition. You Your Yours

He His His
water is this? Is it yours?”,
“Whose coat is this? Is it his?” She Her Hers

It Its Its
We can also use possessive
pronouns and nouns with “of”. For We Our Ours
example: “Laila is a friend of They Their Theirs
ours”.
Possessives: Questions
When asking questions about possession, we use whose. There are two
patterns:

Pattern A: Whose is this coat? Whose are those socks?

Pattern B: Whose coat is this? Whose socks are those?
