Objectives:
Describe and illustrate the median of ungrouped
data.
Find the median of the grouped data.
Demonstrate appreciation of finding the median as
important skills needed to understand the statistical
data.

Directions: Read each questions carefully. Give your answer orally.

 What is median?
 Median is one of the measures of central tendency.
 The median is the value of the middle term when data are
arranged in either ascending or descending order.
 If there is an even number of items, the median is taken as
the arithmetic mean of the two values falling in the middle.
 Half of the terms is located above the median while the
other half, below the median.

Group 1
“Who’s In The Middle?”
Sonya’s Kitchen received an invitation for one person
from a food exposition. The service crew seven member is
very eager to go. To be fair to all, Sonya decided to
choose a person whose age falls within the median age of
her seven members. She made a list such as:
Questions:
a. Arrange the ages in ascending order.
b. What is the middle value?
c. Is there a crew with this
representative age?
d. How many crews are younger than
this age? Older than this age?
e. Who is now the representative of
Sonya’s Kitchen in the Food Fair?

“The Newly Hired Crew”
If at the end of the month, Sonya’s Kitchen hired another
crew member whose age is 22, the data now consists of
eight ages: 18, 20, 18, 19, 21, 18, 47 and 22, an even
number. How many middle entries are there?
Let us find out by following these simple steps:
a. Arrange the crew’s ages in numerical order.
b. Find the two middle values (ages).
c. Get the average of the two middle values.
d. What is now the median age?
e. How many are below this age? above this age?
 How to find the median?

Procedure:
1. Arrange the data from smallest to largest.
2. For an odd number of data values in the distribution,
Median = Middle data value
3. For an even number of data values in the distribution,

Example 1:
The library logbook shows that 58, 60, 54, 35, and 97 books,
respectively, were borrowed from Monday to Friday last
week. Find the median.
Solution:

1. Arrange the data in increasing order.

35, 54, 58, 60, 97
2. Is the arranged numbers are odd or even?
Odd
3. Median = Middle data value (For odd data value)
Since the middle value is the median, then the median is 58.
Example 2:
Andrea’s scores in 10 quizzes during the first quarter are 8, 7,
6, 10, 9, 5, 9, 6, 10,and 7. Find the median.
Solution
:1. Arrange the data in increasing order.
5, 6, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10
2. Is the arranged numbers odd or even?
Even
3. Median = (𝑆𝑢𝑚 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑖𝑑𝑑𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠)/2
=(7+8)/2
=15/2
=7.5
Hence, median = 7.5
