According to the legend, the Jade Emperor made an
order to designate
animals as the calendar signs. The twelve animals
that arrive first in the banquet
shall be selected. On that day, the rat got up early
and rushed to the banquet. On
his way, he met the ox and asked the ox to carry him
on his back. As the two were
approaching the site, the rat slid in front of the ox,
and became the first lucky
animal of the Chinese zodiac.
QUESTIONS.
1. Which of the following belongs to the
first 50% that arrived earlier than the
rest of the group?
2. Which of the following belongs to the
second 50% that arrived later than the
rest of the group?
3. Which of the following represents the
median?

Measures of Position of
Ungrouped Data
(Quartiles)
Measures of Position
is a measure by which the
position of a data is
determined through its
value.
Quartiles are the score points
which divide a distribution into four
equal parts.

Q1 Q2 Q3
Q1 is called the lower quartile or the first quartile and
Q3 is the upper quartile or the third quartile and
Q1<Q2<Q3, where Q2 is nothing but the median. When
we say median, it is the middle value when the number
of items is odd or the average of the two middle values
when the number of items in the distribution is even.
The difference between Q3 and Q1 is the interquartile
range. Since the second quartile is equal to the median,
the steps in the computation of median by identifying
the median class is the same as the steps in identifying
the Q1 class and the Q3 class.
EXAMPLES
During the month of March, Dr.
Garcia recorded the number of
patients who came out of the
hospital each day. The results are
14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10,
and 11. Find the lower quartile and
upper quartile of the data.
Find the lower quartile and the upper
quartile of the data.

Method
Mendenhall Lower Quartile

Sincich If L falls halfway between
two integers, round up. The
Method Lth element is the lower
quartile value (Q1).
Mendenhall Lower Quartile

Sincich If L falls halfway between
two integers, round up. The
Method Lth element is the lower
quartile value (Q1).
Mendenhall Upper Quartile
and (U)= 3/4 (n+1)
Sincich If U falls halfway between
two integers, round down.
Method The uth element is the
upper quartile value (Q3).
Step-by-Step Procedure
1st Step: Arrange the given data set in
ascending order.
2nd Step: Find the value of n.
3rd Step: Find Q1.
4th Step: Find Q1 in the arranged set.
5th Step: Find Q3.
6th Step: Find Q3 in the arranged set.
7th Step: Find the interquartile range.
EXAMPLE

Understanding Statistics
LINEAR
INTERPOLATION
METHOD
LINEAR INTERPOLATION
METHOD
is often used to find the
estimated, median quartiles of a
set of data.
STEP-BY-STEP
procedure
Step 1. Arrange the scores in ascending order.
Step 2. Locate the position of the score in the distribution.
Step 3. If the result is a decimal number, proceed for the
interpolation.
Step 4. Find the difference between two values where is situated.
Step 5. Multiple the result in step 4 by the decimal part obtained in
step 2.
Step 6. Add the result in step 5 to the second smaller number in
step 4.
EXAMPLE 1
{1, 27, 16. 7, 31, 7, 30, 3, 21}
QUIZ
Find the first quartile(Q1), middle quartile (Q2) ,
third quartile (Q3), and the interquartile range of
the given set of data.
