Need of Washed Coking Coal
• Coking coal washing: Is a process of beneficiation to reduce ash content.
• Coking coal used in steel making: Used for making COKE, a feed stock for blast furnace
• A scarce commodity: Limited reserves in India.
• Domestic coking coal used as blend with imported coking coal: Being High-in-Ash, only
washed domestic coking coal used as blend in the ratio 20-30 to 100 with imported low-
ash coking coal.
• High in Demand: ‘National Steel Mission’ envisages 300 Mn Te steel production by 2030.
FY23 production- 125 Mn Te.
• Import dependence: Steel industry imports ≈85% coking coal which is Low-In-Ash
• “Mission Coking Coal” rolled-out by the Govt of India: Coal companies tasked with
unlocking the coking coal potential with a view to reduce import bill.

o Site no 5 (On top of a reclaimed dump near the Mine 1)- Available area on the top of
the dump, not compact and remains unconsolidated to bear the heavy loads of the CHP
infrastructure. Poses serious safety and serviceability concerns.
Particular Details
Present Height of OB 48 m
Safe bearing pressure for a foundation of a typical 2.0 MTPA Coal Washery 250 kPa
Suitable distance from crest of Slope for construction of washery 40 meter
o As per a study*, OB dump site is not suitable for permanent and heavy structures (like
washery) having significant static and dynamic loading generating a considerable
bearing pressure.
* Feasibility study for the construction of 10 MTPA Washery on OB Dump from structural strength and
stability perspective, carried out by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in Nov 2022
