1.1 RESEARCH BACKGROUND

• Agricultural waste causes challenges in

disposing them.
• Raw material like rice husk is not a harmful
to the environment
• The alternative to reduce the
waste has now been
highlighted among researcher
around the globe. (Role of Decomposers in Agricultural Waste Management

1.2 PROBLEM
STATEMENT
• Particleboard manufactures face an
inconsistent supply of raw material and the
absences of an established supply chain
• Particleboard industry always uses shavings
produced in saw mills or wood cut straight
out of the forest due to high-quality board
• Removal of trees from the logging of tress
for their timber in order to boards has
resulted in a negative environment impact.
1.2 PROBLEM
STATEMENT
• The reduce of timber supply from the
natural forest effected the demand of
the particleboard in future.
• Rice mill produce a lot of waste in term
of ash which is rice husk.
OBJECTIVES
1. To investigate the potentiality of utilizing the rice husk in the
production of particleboard.
2. To analyze the physical and mechanical properties of the
particle board.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH
• Study about the characteristic of rice husk and the optimum
percentage of rice husk in adding with wood ash.
• Standard size of particle board 300 mm x 300 mm 15 mm,
(thickness).
• The rice husk percentage are 0%, 40%, 50% and 60%.

Literature Review
PARTICLE BOARD
Particle board is a type of engineered wood product made from wood
particles, such as sawdust and wood chips, combined with a resin
binder.

It is commonly used in furniture and construction for its affordability

and versatility. The board's density and strength depend on the size
and distribution of the particles within it.
• Rice husk is the protective outer layer of rice
grains, composed mainly of silica.

RICE HUSK • It is a byproduct of rice milling and is often used as

a renewable biomass fuel or in the production of
various products like biofuels, insulation, and
compost.
• The husk's high silica content makes it resistant to
pests and fungal decay.
METHODOLOGY
PHASE 1

By grinding and cutting Screened or Is mixed

into small pieces Sieve to achieve following to the
obtained from Monex a consistent size manufacturer’s
Timber SDN.BHD (25 mm-35 mm) guidelines.
PHASE 2

The board is allowed to cure

according to resin’s specification

The board is carefully removed

from the mold.
PHASE 3
RAW MATERIAL
PREPARATION
Rice Husk
• Rice Husk (RH) retrieve from rice mill plant
• RH is then dried under the sun and screened.
• Sieve to the size range of 25 mm - 35 mm
Wood Particle
• Wood particle (WP)is retrieved
from Monex Timber Sdn.Bhd
• (WP) is then dried and screened
Mold For Particleboard
+ Standard testing size of particle board is 300 mm x 300 mm x
15mm (thickness)
+ wood / metal mold will be created to do the testing.

PROPERTIES
Compression strength
• Compression test is a essential test to
determine the strength of particlboard.
• Expected strength is to achieve is minimum
8.8 MPa (IS)
Flexural strength
They are used to determine
the stress-strain behavior of particle
board.
Expected strength is more than 2.5
MPa (IS)
Tensile strength serves to measure the strength of the internal
bonding within the material
The uses is comply with BS EN: 319:2011
Minimum 1.25 MPa
SIGNIFICIANT OF PROJECT
+ Utilization of Rice husk in particleboard will create enviromental
friendly construction material in the future.
+ sustainable construction material since the watse being used
instead of other natural resources.
+ This research can be used as a guideline for future development.
