General principles of splinting
23
 Should be long enough to extend past the joints
 Should be adequately padded between the splint and the skin
 Joints must be immobilized above and below the location of
the fracture
 Care must always be taken that the splint is not applied too
tightly
 Inspect the fingers for color and swelling which is good
indication for a bandage that is too tight.
 If there is numbness, tingling sensation, or inability to move
fingers or toes loosen ties immediately; otherwise permanent
nerve damage may result.

i . Fracture board
 It is a device used to place between the bed and
mattress in order to make the bed firm, and to prevent
the bed from sagging.
 It is used for patients with a fracture of the spine, hip,
legs, or slipped disc to prevent movement of the
injured part that might cause worsening of the
injury.
 Nowadays most hospital beds have a firm base, and
fracture boards are not necessary in such beds.

J. Back Rest
 It is a mechanical device made of wood or metal that is
used in addition to pillows to provide support to the
back of a patient in the sitting or semi-sitting position
 The back rest may be attached to the bed or removable.
 Most modern hospital beds have a gatch (used as back
rest if elevated) that can be elevated or lowered as
desired. In this kind of bed there is no need of attaching
any extra appliance
 Where there is no backrest, extra pillows can be used
