Remember!
The Quantum Mechanical Model is the
current description of electrons in atoms.

The quantum mechanical model describes the probable

location of electrons the atom using atomic orbitals.
These orbits are called Levels or Energy
Levels
Remember!
Principal energy levels n =1 to 7.
(Row # on the periodic table)
The electron’s principal energy level is based
on its location around the nucleus.
Remember!

ATOMIC ORBITALS:
is a region of space in which there is a
high probability of finding an
electron assigned letters s, p, d or f
Remember!

Energy sublevels correspond

to a shape where the electron
is likely to be found.
Remember!

s orbital (1) - spherical p orbitals (3) – dumb-bell shaped

Remember!

d orbitals (5) f-orbitals (7)

Energy Levels, Sublevels, and Orbitals
1. Principal energy levels – n, assigned values 1-7
2. Energy sublevels- s, p, d, f (Type of suite in a hotel)
 s sublevel – 1 orbital
 p sublevel – 3 orbitals
 d sublevel – 5 orbitals
 f sublevel – 7 orbitals
3. Orbitals – Two electrons per orbital (Two people per room)
ELECTRONIC
CONFIGURATION
The arrangement of
electrons outside the atom,
or the
distribution of electrons
ELECTRONIC
CONFIGURATION
is a method of distributing
electrons in different sublevels
or orbitals as well as in the
main energy levels.
A typical electron configuration consists
of numbers, letters, and superscripts with
the following format:
1. A number indicates the energy level
2. A letter indicates the type of sublevel or
orbital (s, p, d, f)
3. A superscript indicates the number of
electrons in the orbital

Filling of atomic orbitals
Aufbau Principle
Electrons will occupy orbitals with lower
energies before occupying higher energy
orbitals. According to this principle, electrons
are filled in the following order:
1s 2s 2p 3s 3p 4s 3d 4p 5s 4d 5p 6s 4f 5d 6p 7s 5f 6d 7p…

Pauli Exclusion
Principle
An orbital may be occupied
by a maximum of two (2)
electrons. Each electron will
have a different spin.

HUND’S RULE
When electrons occupy orbitals of
equal energy, one electron enters
each orbital until all the orbitals
contain one electron, then a second
electron is added to each orbital.

VALENCE
ELECTRON
are electrons in the outermost orbital

The group number corresponds to

number of valence electrons.
