• 1930’s FASHION
• During the 1920’s, the Philippines ore the Traje de
Mestiza but eventually adapted a new sense of clothing
in 1930’s. This time became famous for their carnivals
and beauty pageants. They started to wear floral printed 1920’S FASHION
dresses with mid-calf length skirts and long hair,
typically worn in bobs at carnivals. Though the Traje de
Mestiza wasn’t fully gone, elders and middle aged
women still wore the traditional dress while young
adults wore it as a formal clothing. Men’s fashion during
the time continued to be the “American” suit.

• 1940’s FASHION
• When 1940 came. The Philippines saw the breakout
of World War II. This resulted in shortages of tailor
shops, clothing boutiques and dressmaking factories.
As austerity measures started, rations were 1930’S FASHION
implemented and people wore simper looks. This
included monochromatic dresses for women and
suits for men only using the coat as formal wear.
During this time, mot people lost their clothes or has
difficult time finding new ones. This style remained
for the rest of the decade and a little into 1950.

• During the first couple of years into the new
decade, the fashion from 40’s remained the ame
due to shortages of shops and boutiques. 1940’S FASHION
Thought a few years into the 50’s people were
given the opportunity to have more necessities.
Women began to wear dresses with floral prints
and knee-length skirts. Men’s fashion changed
from suits to more youthful clothing such as
sweaters, colorful polos, pants and flannels.

• Entering 1960, the Barong Tagalog was
once again worn in the Philippine society.
This decade shifted towards a more 1950’S FASHION
youthful vibe and included new patterns
on baros such as flower embroidered
designs and geometric shapes.

• 1970’s FASHION
• During the 1970’s, Ferdinand E. Marcos, 10 th
president of the Philippines, proclaimed
Barong Tagalog Week (June5-11) and
eventually, officially designated it as the 1960’S FASHION
“national attire”. It was commonly worn with
belt trousers or for women, a wrap around
skirt and dress shoes. Along with the barong
tagalog, the vintage and hippie culture
emerged during this time. Clothing such as
bell bottoms, sweater vests, turtle necks and
bright patterned polos and pants were worn.

• 1980’s FASHION
• Now entering the 1980’s, people in The
Philippines began to have a variety of
clothing. Men wore brightly colored t-shirts
and denim jeans for a casual look, throwing 1970’S FASHION
away the more formal appearance. Women
started to wear clothes with shoulder pads
along with hairstyles which became more
emphasized in society. Teenage boys and girls
typically wore pastel and neon jackets, pants
and shorts. By the late 1980’s a new style
emerged which soon pave the way into the

• 1990’s FASHION
• During the late 80’s, The Philippines culture
started to move away from their brightly colored
clothes to a more simple and laid back style. Now,
they began to wear casual, dark toned, oversized 1980’S FASHION
and loose attire. Men and women specifically wore
oversized shirts, denim shorts and jeans, simple
blouses and sneakers. Men’s hairstyle also changed
by growing their hair out. A common style worn
by teenage boys was the cachupoy. A straight
hairstyle with a middle parting. This was also the
decade when people from all social classes upper
or lower started to wear the same style of clothes.

• 2000’s FASHION
• Finally entering the 2000’s, this decaed
introduced a mash up of different styles,
popularizing spaghetti straps, oversized
shirts and pants and colorful clothing. The 1990’S FASHION
90’s fashion remained the same during the
early years and by the mid 2000’s, colorful
clothing in particular began to rise
including bright colors, textures and
patterns. By the late 2000’s, the Filipino
style consisted of jejemon clothing of
oversized shirts with large prints and high

• 2010’s FASHION
• Now in 2010, the development of
social media began to influence the
Filipino style. With this rise most men 2000’S FASHION
and women began wearing media
inspired clothes. The early years of
this decade began with a continuation
of the late 2000’s fashion and
eventually evolved into a more
distinctive style.

• 2020’s FASHION
• Finally in 2020, the continuation of
media influenced the Filipino style.
Apps that rose in particular include 2010’S FASHION
Instagram, Pinterest and Tiktok.
There has been no style that has
specifically stood out because there
have been many that arose during this
time and there are more to come.
