Weather Disturbance
• A weather disturbance is a term used to
describe a change in atmospheric
conditions or weather patterns.

• Weather Disturbances are also referred

to as natural disasters, as they are
capable of wreaking havoc on roads,
power lines and buildings.
• The jet stream is a
fast, narrow
current of air
flowing from west
to east that
encircles the
globe
The strong temperature contrast
between polar and tropical air gives
rise to the jet stream.

Instabilities of the jet stream flow in

the mid-latitudes cause extra
tropical cyclones. Enter title

tropical storms, tropical

depressions and typhoons.
Typhoons

• When a tropical cyclone

occurs in the part of the
Northwest Pacific Ocean
that is west of the dateline
and reaches wind speeds
of at least 74 mph, it is
called a typhoon.
Hurricane

If a tropical cyclone of that

intensity occurs in the
North Atlantic, in the
Northeast Pacific east of
the dateline or the South
Pacific east of the 160th
meridian east, it is called a
hurricane.
Flash Flooding

In some cases, weather

disturbances may cause
severe weather conditions.
Tropical cyclones tend to
produce strong winds and
heavy rainfall that may
cause flash flooding.
Thunderstorms
Thunderstorms, which kill
more people than hurricanes
and tornadoes, produce
thunder, lightning and
sometimes hail. Violent
storms such as tornadoes and
hurricanes are equally
destructive.
Tornado
Tornado is a small-
diameter column of
violently rotating air
developed within a
convective cloud and in
contact with the
ground.
