OF LITERARY DYNAMISM
• Formalism, correctness, accuracy in word choice and rhythmic expression of
thought became the ideal.
• Criticism with logical reasoning as shown in Maxims by Duke Francois de la
Rochefoucauld
• Use of satire both in prose and verse was on of the most popular forms of
expressions (satirical comedies by Moliere; La Fontaine’s fables; and heroic
tragedies modelled after the Greek Dramas written by Corneille and Racine

DURING THE AGE
OF REASON
JEAN DE LA FONTAINE (1621-1695)

• One of the major figures in French Literature during the 17th century
• Well-known for fables – a collection of wise and satirical observations of
human nature told in faultless French prose
• Fontaine believed that “a fable was an imaginary episode used to make people
see themselves and have them acquire a love of wisdom and virtue.”
• A fable consists two parts: the body and the soul (the story and the moral)

• In Greece a slaved named Aesop became known as the great teller of stories of
animals
• Kindness, foolishness, or cruelty of humans as depicted in the actions of
animals who represent them.

• French dramatist and father of the modern French comedy


• He ridiculed religious hypocrisy and used rigorous satire to expose
people’s pretentiousness
• He lived in an age when elegant manners , language and way of
dressing was more valued than it is today

Misanthrope
• The play is about Alceste, “the misanthropic hero of the play, lives
in an upper-class society where surface politeness and flattery are
rule in public while malicious gossip is a favorite pastime in
private.”
