EXERCISE NO. 3 (Birth of a Filipino National Consciousness)

There were many factors that caused the rise of Filipino nationalism.
Below are some of the factors that awakened in Filipino hearts the consciousness of being one nation
with common racial origin, common customs and traditions, common history and destiny, and common
grievances and aspirations.

Briefly explain how each contributed to the rise of Filipino nationalism.

1. Influx of liberal ideas

- The Philippines was opened by Spain to World Trade. Liberal ideas, contained in books and
newspapers, were ideologies of the American and French Revolutions and the books were from:
o Jean Jacques Rousseau (Social Contract)
o John Locke ( Two treatise of the government)
o Thomas Paine (Common Sense)
o Thomas Jefferson
o American and French Revolution
2. Spanish Revolution of 1868

- The triumph of liberalism in Spain against autocratic rule of Isabella II resounded across the seas
to the shores of her oversees colonies.
- The Filipinos came to enjoy for the first time and the sweet taste of a liberal regime including
freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly and human rights
3. Opening of the SUEZ Canal

- The opening of Suez Canal to world shipping in 1869 stimulated Philippine progress as well. The
Suez Canal shortened the distance between the Spain and the Philippines. It paved way for the
entry of liberalism in the country in such a way Illustrados who go to European countries due to
the opening of Suez Canal were made aware of the conditions in our country.
4. Secularization Movement

- The secularization movement in the Philippines under Spanish colonial administration from the
18th to late 19th century advocated for greater rights for native Filipino Roman Catholic
clergymen. The secularization movement encouraged the assignment of native Filipino priests
to head parishes. The movement had significant implications to Filipino nationalism and
the Philippine Revolution.
5. Martyrdom of GOMBURZA

- The Filipino people deeply resented the execution of Fathers Gomez, Burgos, and Zamora. They
were acclaimed as the executed priests who were true martyrs of the Philippines. The execution
of GOMBURZA sped up the growth of Philippine Nationalism, which ultimately brought about
Spain’s downfall.
