What is a periodic table

• A periodic table consists of 118 elements.

• Elements can be either metal or non-metal

• An element is made of one type of atom. Each atom has different properties
which is why elements have different properties.
Types of elements

All elements are mentioned in the periodic table.

For eg:-

Li is a metal and stands for lithium OR B stands for boron and is a gas (non-
metal)
Groups and periods

• The periodic table is organized into rows and columns. However we do not
call them rows and columns.

• We call them groups and periods

Compounds

A compound is the term for two or more different types of atoms bonding.

When we join two elements the metal comes first then the non-metal.

In the non-metal we replace letters with i-d-e.

For e.g.- Sodium + Chlorine = Sodium chloride

Another word for Sodium chlorine is Salt

When two metals bond it is called an alloy and it will not be a compound.

Compounds can also end in a-t-e when there is oxygen present in the compound.

For e.g.- Copper + Sulfur + Oxygen = Copper sulfate

Formulas

Every compound has a formula. A formula contains the symbols of the bonded
elements in the compound.

For eg: hydrogen sulfide Sometimes You might see Formulas like H2S
The two represents how many hydrogen atoms are
bonded to one sulfur atom. If we do not see a number
at the bottom it means that there is only on atom
HS

For example: H 2O. It means 2 Hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom.
It is also water.
